Inside This Post

The first hotel to be inducted into Universal Orlando Resort's Prime Value category, Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort is the ultimate retro getaway. Inspired by classic Florida beach resorts of the 1950s and 60s, this vibrant, vintage slice of paradise is perfect for our fellow amphibious froggies. Not only does this hotel house two sparkling pools AND a relaxing lazy river, but it's also a mere hop away from Universal Volcano Bay. Sound groovy? Then grab your flip-flops and slap on some sunscreen because we're diving into everything you need to know about Cabana Bay Beach Resort!

Booking your Universal Orlando hotel stay through Undercover Tourist unlocks the same benefits as booking directly through Universal. Overview of Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Featuring 2,200 rooms ranging from standard accommodations to family suites, Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort is the perfect hotel for any frog fam. Spacious and bright, this mid-century beach retreat was actually the first hotel to join Universal's three original hotels (i.e. Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort) in over a decade when it opened in 2014. The undertaking proved to be so successful that Universal expanded the resort in 2017 (alongside the opening of Volcano Bay) — adding two towers that contain 200 rooms each. Despite having the most rooms of any hotel on property, Cabana Bay still manages to sell out during busier times of the year ... and it's no wonder why!

As with all of Universal's hotels, Cabana Bay Beach Resort offers exclusive theme park benefits that make staying at a Universal hotel a terrific value for guests, such as free transportation to the parks and Universal CityWalk, resort-wide charging privileges and complimentary delivery of merchandise purchased throughout the resort. Best of all, all Universal hotel guests are granted Early Park Admission to Universal Studios Florida AND/OR Universal Islands of Adventure up to one hour before they open and Volcano Bay up to 30 minutes before it opens, so you can get a head start on all the frogciting fun!

Before we hop into all the frogciting specifics of this ribbeting resort, check out our full video tour of Cabana Bay:

Cabana Bay Beach Resort Rooms

Let's start with the rooms since everyone is looking for a comfortable place to unwind and catch some ZZZZZs after their day in the parks. First of all, the decor is bright mod and beachy in oranges and blues. There are far-out nods to the past with its vintage-inspired furniture, a retro alarm clock and toiletries. Of course, there are also some amenities that the modern family can't live without, and you'll be hoppy to know that the TV is a flat-screen.

Cabana Bay Beach Resort - Beds

Another seemingly small thing that really is a big deal for modern families is the electrical outlet situation. We're an especially wired family with all of our cameras and other gear, but most families these days need multiple outlets for charging phones, cameras, tablets and gaming devices. As a family of four, we have no trouble finding outlets, which made Tad especially thrilled since he normally has to wait for us to finish charging before it's his turn.

As for the different room types, there's a wide variety to choose from. Standard rooms are comfortable and affordable and sleep up to four frogs with two queen beds. Book a Poolside room if you want to overlook the expansive and lively pool courtyard or book a Volcano Bay View room if you want stunning views of the mighty Krakatau volcano and tropical landscape of Universal's water theme park.

While there are plenty of standard rooms, larger families or even smaller families staying longer than a few days should consider a Family Suite, which accommodates up to six guests with two queen beds and a pull-out sofa. These rooms — which range from Interior Entry to Exterior Entry — include a kitchenette, two flat-screen TVs, a sliding partition to the bedrooms for privacy and an oversized bathroom area that allows three frogs to get ready at once. You can even book a Poolside suite if you so choose!

Lastly, if your heart is set on extra square footage and epic views, splurge on a Volcano Bay View 2-Bedroom Suite. This room features one queen bed, two full-size beds, two full bathrooms, a living room with a pull-out sofa, three flat-screen TVs, a kitchenette with mini-refrigerator, microwave and small sink ... and, of course, gnarly views of the land the Waturi call home.

Transportation at Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Like all Universal Orlando hotels, Cabana Bay offers complimentary shuttle bus transportation to the hub at CityWalk for access to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Buses arrive at the hotel every 10 to 15 minutes. You can also walk to CityWalk and the theme parks, but that will take you anywhere from 25 to 30 minutes. The only way to enter Volcano Bay from Cabana Bay, however, is via the designated walking path, but that's right next door and will only take you five to 10 minutes to get to!

If you're bringing a car to Cabana Bay, overnight guest self-parking is $26 plus tax, per vehicle. If you're just visiting for a few hours, day guest self-parking is complimentary for up to five minutes, $10 plus tax, per vehicle for anywhere from five to 30 minutes and $50 plus tax, per vehicle for any time over 30 minutes. (Regular parking at Universal CityWalk is only $32, so we recommend parking there and taking a shuttle to the hotel if you're just hopping over for a bit!)

Amenities, Recreation and Shopping at Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Possibly even more important to you than the rooms, the amenities are Cabana Bay are second to none. The Cabana Courtyard features a fabulous 100-foot water slide in the guise of a retro dive tower, chic cabanas available for rent, fun poolside activities and shaded picnic tables, whereas the Lazy River Courtyard features a blissful winding river (tubes are available for purchase) and plenty of outdoor seating perfect for soaking up rays. At both courtyards, you'll find a massive, zero-entry pool, a tropical sand beach and at least one sizzling fire pit.

Have I mentioned that Cabana Bay Beach Resort has its very own 10-lane bowling alley? On the second floor of the lobby building, you can get in on the 10-pin action at Galaxy Bowl. A perfect activity for your check-in day if you're not planning on hopping to the parks, this alley even illuminates at night for an out-of-this-world touch! The lanes are open from noon to 11 p.m. every day. (The last lane reservation is at 10:45 p.m.)

Cabana Bay Beach Resort - Fitness Studio

If reaching your step count in the theme parks isn't enough of a workout for you, check out the Jack LaLanne Physical Fitness Studio. Covered in memorabilia of the famed television physical fitness pioneer, this fitness studio is complimentary for all hotel guests! As for the tadpoles, they can burn off some steam at Game-O-Rama, an arcade filled with timeless favorites, as well as more modern video games.

Lastly, like every hotel on property, there's a Universal Studios Store located in the lobby where you'll find towels, T-shirts, toys, toiletries and more. Momma and Poppa frogs looking for a night out can use the kids' clubs at other on-site hotels.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in every guest room (and in public spaces) and a complimentary Pack'n Play is available upon request.

Delizioso Pizza

Getting some late-night cravings? Dial 3-4300 from your room's phone and order from a mouthwatering selection of salads, pizzas, desserts and more!

What to Consider Before Staying at Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Cabana Bay Beach Resort - Seating Area

Whether you're itching to float your cares away in a lazy river, go 10 rounds at a bowling alley, indulge in a succulent shake or sundae or soak in the sun and the retro vibes, Cabana Bay Beach Resort is a wallet-friendly option that's just mere steps away from Waturi paradise. It's also perfect for frogs wanting more space ... or just some breathtaking views from their hotel room.

Keep in mind that only guests at Portofino Bay, Royal Pacific and Hard Rock get Universal Express Unlimited included in their stay. The same goes for priority seating at select restaurants.

Cabana Bay Beach Resort - Starlight

Apart from that, the mellow ambiance and iconic colors of this brilliantly designed beach resort are truly outta sight! A TripAdvisor Hall of Fame Award-winner (and for a good reason), we can't recommend this nostalgic hotel enough for frogs of all ages. As they used to say, it's a gas!

Our family is coming to Cabana Bay in August. Can guest request an area of the Hotel i.e.: top floors, near the bowling alley... Also, what side/area of Cabana Bay is closest to the shuttle pickup point and/or the walking path to the parks.

Hi Lori,

Which pool you get depends on which type of room you want, either a standard or a suite. The courtyard side only offers suites. You have several options when booking: standard rooms (lazy river side), poolside rooms (lazy river side), tower family suite (lazy river side) and courtyard family suite (courtyard side). To make special room requests, call 1-800-711-0080.

Hi Mot,

Thank you! We always recommend you do the math for your family to see what's most economical, be it a shuttle, cab or renting a car. For shuttles, we recommend Mears and offer discounts for this service. We also offer a great discount on car rental when you purchase tickets through us. Because the shuttle service is per person, it sometimes is cheaper to rent, especially if you may be traveling from Universal to Disney or SeaWorld or elsewhere!

I have a question, would it be worth to stay at cabana bay for one night prior,to our stay at Disney. Our original plan was to stay at Disney Polynesian for 7 nights next August. I don't think Universal will be in our plans it would really be an overnight stop but now looking at the resort I'm wondering if we should do 2'nights at Cabana and 6 at Disney. Sometimes things like this aren't worth one night as check in can be a hassle if you can't get in early or a hassle to pack and unpack for,a,short, period of time.

Years ago stayed at Nickolodeon for two nights prior to,a,5 night stay at,Disney and check in a hassle as elevators

took forever and wished we had stayed at Disney, the extra night. Nick was ok for the kids, not so much for,U.S. Any suggestions on this would be great. Cabana Bay looks like a lot of fun for a stopover

Hi!

My family and I will be staying at the Cabana Bay Beach Resort in early August this year. We are taking our daughter for her 11th birthday. She will actually have her birthday during our stay (turning 11). Do you know if I can arrange to have a birthday cake prepared? Also, I was wondering how late the pools are open at the resort.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Jamie,

Sounds like it will be a sweet birthday surprise. You can order a cake from Loews Royal Pacific Resort, and they will deliver it to Cabana Bay. You just need to call the star services department at least 48 hours in advance at 407-503-3313. The price depends on the size, icing and fillings! The pools in the Cabana Courtyard and Lazy River Courtyard open at 8 a.m. The Lazy River Courtyard closes at 10 p.m., and the Cabana Courtyard closes at at 11 p.m.

Hi Yvonne,

You can hire a shuttle through Mears or take a cab. Depending on how many you have in your party, the shuttle may be more or less than the cab ride. I recommend doing the math, as you may find that renting a car is more economical. If you purchase tickets through us, you can get car rental for up to 50% off.

We have four day tickets to universal so wonder if you think we should visits the parks before Thanksgiving week? Or will the Monday and Tuesday of that week be ok? Also, I see mentioned in comments above that Mears transport is available to get to Disney parks, any idea on a cost for 3 adults 2 children? We are just trying to decide if budget would be better to stay part of the time at a Disney Resort. Thanks for your help.

Great review! staying at Cabana Bay for fist time in August! A couple of questions-you refer to the lazy river courtyard..when picking a section that is not an option-is that the same as tower courtyard? Is there a freezer or just a frig? How do you get to other resorts to use the pools? Are they walking distance? And lastly-you mentioned in another person's question to get to DC you can take a bus to Sea World-then what? Walk to DC? Is it close? Sorry for so many questions!!

Hi Angela,

Thanks for the praise! Yes, the Tower Courtyard is where you'll find the lazy river. The resort isn't too big, so even if you stay around the other pool, it won't take very long to walk over to the lazy river. The rooms just have fridges, no freezers. You could walk to Royal Pacific. There are no direct shuttles between the resorts, so you would need to take transportation to City Walk and then transfer to the resort you are headed to.

Please report back on your adventures!

We're travelling to Universal in November 2015 and we're staying at Cabana Bay. Travelling with four kids is an expensive circus and we're trying to find ways to cut down on our food budget while at the resort/parks without causing screams of "I'm HUNGRY!" all day long. Breakfast in the room, lunch at the quick service counters in the parks, but dinner...is Cabana Bay's dining options reasonable and edible for three nights? If we do City Walk one night, what would you recommend?

Hi Mariel,

There is plenty of variety with the Cabana Bay dining. The food at any of the theme parks and hotels will be more expensive than what you'd pay back home, but we found it quite delicious and filling. CityWalk has a lot of terrific restaurants, so it really comes down to specific tastes and cuisine. There are some quick options too that are more affordable.

Reply

FrogBlog Says...

Hi Jamie,

We think it is worth it to stay on-site because of the benefits inside the theme parks. At Cabana Bay, for example, you get one hour early admission to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (one or both parks). Depending on when you are visiting, this can be a huge benefit. But if you are not going to take advantage of the early admission, then it may not be worth it to you. All of the resort hotels charge for parking, but you would be paying to park in the garage any way.

Mears Transportation runs daily shuttles to Legoland and Busch Gardens in Tampa for a very reasonable cost.

Do you recommend paying extra for a poolside room -- or does it not matter?

I would not recommend because there are obstructed views . I would go to the higher floors and enjoy the view from up above

Hi Karen,

It's always nice to have a poolside room, although I think it is a personal preference on whether it is worth it to upgrade.

Best,

Secondly..if i wanted to go to hollwood studios or epcot..taxi is the best way to go? Im not sure if you can answer this..but when we arrive in florida...taxi to cabana?

Be warned - this is the *only* universal studios hotel that does NOT offer Express Pass benefits to its guests. We were told - by several front desk personnel - we had to pay $159.00 *per* person to get Express Passes (that was In addition to our already-purchased park passes. it was Christmas - don't know if that explains the increased price). We saved hundreds by checking into Portofino Bay - which offers Express Passes for free. Cabana Bay told us they don't give Express Passes because it's a "value hotel." We were paying $359.00 per night - so it's up to you to decide if that's a "value."

How did you check into portifino and get the express passes for free to save you hundreds of dollars if you stayed at cabana bay? I will be staying here with my family in December and would love to do that. Thanks for all that you do!

Hi Courtney,

You're going to have so much fun at Universal!

With Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios right next door to each other, the park-to-park ticket makes it easy to hop back and forth and is required to ride the Hogwarts Express between the Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade over to King's Cross in London.

As far as transportation, shuttles would likely be more economical for your party of two, although it is worth looking at car rental as well. We do offer discounts on Mears for roundtrip service between the airport and the Universal hotels. Mears also has roundtrip service between Universal and Disney.

Let us know what you end up doing!

Hello do you know if breakfast is included in the hotel price or do you have to go up and pay for it everyday. Also how much are the slush puppies.

Hi Rory,

Breakfast is not included, so you would need to pay for it. You can view menus here.

Where do you recommend I book my hotel stay for Cabana Bay? Also, how much are the retro floats sold for and could you give a price break down of some of the activities you enjoyed at the hotel, such as bowling.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Anna,

I recommend you book direct with Loews. The floats range in price from $3 to $12 plus tax. We love the bowling alley, and we got dinner up there one night while we played. If you're into fitness, check out the Jack LaLanne Fitness Studio, which in addition to being a regular gym, includes a ton of memorabilia. The arcade is also a great place to burn off a bit of energy.

Hoppy planning!
