  Inside This Post

Are you ready to fly with dragons? If so, step into the Isle of Berk and take flight on Hiccup's Wing Gliders at Epic Universe! As an aspiring dragon rider myself, I get a big kick out of the Viking theming and double launch. 'Sup! My name is Tad, and I'm here to tell ya all about Hiccup's Wing Gliders. Let's roll.

Hiccup's Wing Gliders - Soaring over water

Overview of Hiccup's Wing Gliders

Hiccup's Wing Gliders is located in the How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk world at Epic Universe — the newest gate at Universal Orlando Resort. It's a froggy family-friendly roller coaster, but don't let that trick you! Hiccup's Wing Gliders packs in some thrills, reaching top speeds of 45 miles per hour.

The coaster starts off pretty gently as you travel through the lush greenery of this immersive Viking world. Soon, you'll come across Hiccup and Toothless before launching at top speeds. At specific points, you'll go over water, which just adds to the overall thrilling experience! About midway through the ride, the coaster will slow down and roll backward as it gears up for its second launch. We like to say it's a mini version of Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure over at Universal Islands of Adventure.

In total, Hiccup's Wing Gliders is only about two minutes. However, in my opinion, it has one of the most beautiful views in all of Epic Universe!  Seriously, the theming of How to Train Your Dragon – Island of Berk is phenomenal!

But like the coaster, let's back up for a second and talk about the queue real quick. It's largely outside, so as Mommy Frog tells me and Lily all the time, you'll want to stay hydrated and wear lots of sunscreen. Once inside, you'll really feel like you're in Hiccup's workshop. To really immerse you in the "How to Train Your Dragon" story, your coaster actually looks like a dragon carved out of wood! Did you know that's actually the theme of Hiccup's Wing Gliders? You're flying on one of his mechanical winged contraptions, meant to simulate riding on the back of a dragon!

Eggs to Look Out For (Literally)

As you ride, you'll come across the Gronckle eggshell. Did you know that this weighs approximately 13 pounds? That's the equivalent of 84 large chicken eggs.

Also, another fun fact: Jay Baruchel, who voices Hiccup in the animated films, actually recorded unique dialogue for each ride vehicle! So, keep an ear out for what he says. How neat is that?

Hiccup's Wing Gliders Accessibility

For aspiring dragon trainers with accessibility needs, here's everything you need to know about Hiccup's Wing Gliders.

  • Those in wheelchairs and ECVs will have to transfer into a modified ride vehicle.
  • Though the ride does have narration, it does not offer assistive listening options.
  • Guests traveling with a collapsible white cane can leave their cane with the attraction attendant and pick it up once the ride is over.
  • A test seat is available at the entrance of the queue, as well as by the lockers.
  • Service animals cannot ride, but there is a portable kennel available upon request.

Will I Have to Use a Locker Before Riding?

Universal Lockers - Hiccup's Wing Gliders Lockers

Yes, you will need to stow any large items you have, including purses, backpacks, diaper bags and souvenir bags in a locker before riding. Like Stardust Racers and Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, loose items are at risk of flying (ha — no pun intended) off.

The ride does not require metal detection, however. Small items are allowed, such as belt bags, as long as they are fully secured and do not interfere with the safety restraints.

Hiccup's Wing Gliders FAQ

Epic Universe - Isle of Berk Portal

Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions you may have about Hiccup's Wing Gliders:

How do I get to the Isle of Berk?

Like the other lands in Epic Universe, the How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk section is accessible through Celestial Park — the main hub. Just walk through the portal and you're there in Berk! The ride entrance to Hiccup's is between Dragon Racer's Rally and Mead Hall, toward the back of the world.

Is it available during Early Park Admission?

Early Park Admission is a benefit for Universal Orlando hotel guests, which allows them access to select rides and attractions up to an hour before the park officially opens. Isle of Berk is not typically included during Early Park Admission, so any guest is allowed to wait for the portal to open.

When is the best time to ride?

If this ride is a top priority, we would recommend waiting for the portal to open, so you can be among the first to ride. Many guests with Early Park Admission go to Super Nintendo World or Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry first, so it is an easier ride to rope drop. The queue is entirely outside, though mostly covered. (Extended parts of the queue are not covered.) For that reason, we would try to avoid the afternoon when temperatures are at their highest. Sunset is a great time for views, and when it's dark, you can even see the Gronckle eggs glowing!

How tall do you have to be to ride Hiccup's Wing Gliders?

Riders need to be at least 40" (or 102 cm) tall to ride Hiccup's Wing Gliders. A supervising companion, who is at least 14 years old, must ride with children who are 40-48" tall.

Is it available with Universal Express Pass?

Yes, it is! Universal Express Pass lets you bypass the line at participating rides, shows and other attractions within Universal Orlando Resort.

Is a Single Rider Line available?

No. Shortly after you put your belongings in a locker, the queue splits into two, as you take a flight of stairs to cross over the loading station. A ride attendant will direct you to either the left or the right side, which corresponds to the number of people in your party. The left side is generally for odd-numbered groups, while the right side is for even-numbered groups.

Is this roller coaster scary?

Lily, did you write this? As with any ride, it's a good question to ask — and mommy and daddy frogs need to know if their tadpole is concerned. But there's nothing super scary about Hiccup's Wing Gliders!

Does this roller coaster go upside down?

No, it does not go upside down. It does go over water, though, at several points throughout the ride.

Who can ride Hiccup's Wing Gliders?

As long as they meet the height requirements and fit safely within the ride vehicle, anyone can ride — and enjoy — Hiccup's Wing Gliders! However, children between the ages of 6 and 12 are probably going to love it the best! But honestly, everyone is going to love it! Even if you've never watched "How to Train Your Dragon" before, you're sure to love this roller coaster. It's that good and that immersive.
