Sup?! Tad here — your go-to teen travel insider. I’ve been on more cruises with my family than I can count, so I know a little somethin' about cruising. Whether you’re into tech, sports, movies or just hanging out with new friends, today’s cruise ships have way more going on for ages 13 to 18 than you might expect. In this post, I’m breaking down some of the biggest cruise lines — Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line — so you can figure out which one might be the best fit for your teen. Let’s dive into what’s included, what costs extra and what makes each line stand out from the rest (or, ya know … leap out from the lily pad.)
FAQs
- What is the best cruise line for teens? The best cruise line for teens depends on their personality and interests. Royal Caribbean is a top choice for thrill-seekers thanks to its surf simulators, zip lines and nonstop activities. Disney Cruise Line is great for teens who enjoy immersive entertainment and want dedicated spaces like Vibe and Edge. Carnival is ideal for social teens who want a fun high-energy atmosphere, while MSC Cruises appeals to tech-savvy teens with modern ships and global vibes. Princess Cruises is a better fit for teens you prefer a more relaxed and low-key experience and Norwegian Cruise Line is a strong choice for teens who want flexibility and independence.
- Are cruises a good vacation option for teenagers? Yes, cruises are a frogtastic vacation options for teens. Most major cruise lines offer dedicated teen clubs and spaces, social events and plenty of onboard activities like sports courts, pools, live entertainment and gaming spaces. Cruises also give teens a mix of independence and structure, allowing them to meet new friends while still enjoying time with family.
- What age is considered a teen on a cruise? Most cruise lines define teens as ages 13 to 17, though some programs start at age 12. Typically, cruise lines split teens into smaller groups, such as 12-14 and 15-17, to offer more age-appropriate activities and social experiences.
- Do teens have to stay in a teen club on a cruise? No, teens are not required to stay in the teen clubs. These spaces are optional and designed as a place to hang out, meet other teens and join activities. Teens can come and go freely on most cruise lines, giving them the flexibility to participate as much or as little as they want.

Let’s shoot straight, in today’s cruise world, it’s pretty hard to find a ship that teens won’t like. The big cruise lines are building massive ships that feel like floating cities filled to the brim with high-energy entertainment, sports and nonstop activities. Most teens (and even younger kids) will find there’s a ton to do aboard, from teen clubs and hangout spaces to waterslides, arcades, sports zones, live shows and awesome food.
If you’re sailing on one of the newer ships, you can count on having plenty to do. Smaller or older ships can still be fun, but they usually don’t have as many teen-focused activities or high-tech spaces. And if you’re on a shorter cruise or one where the destination, like Europe or Alaska, is the main highlight, what’s on board might not matter as much. You know your teen best, but these are my general takes on which cruise lines my fellow teens would probably think are the coolest.

Best Cruise for Teens: Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line offers a uniquely magical cruise experience that somehow manages to feel both nostalgic and grown-up — perfect for teens who aren’t quite ready to give up the pixie dust but still want their own space to be independent. On every Disney ship, teens can hang out in either Vibe or Edge, depending on their age at the time of sailing.
Vibe is a modern lounge just for ages 14–17 and is designed with modular seating, game consoles, music stations and even a smoothie bar. There’s also Edge for younger teens and tweens, ages 11–14, with fun interactive programming, chill-out zones and gaming stations.
Daily events in Vibe and Edge range from karaoke contests and dance parties to group games, movie marathons and scavenger hunts and challenges. Counselors are low-key and friendly — more like cool camp counselors than babysitters.
If you're sailing on the Disney Wish, Disney Treasure or the Disney Destiny, teens also have access to The Hideaway — an additional space where teens can kick back their flippers and relax. The Hideaway is an additional room connected to Vibe with a dance floor, DJ booth and retro-inspired details.
Also on the Wish Class ships is the Hero Zone, located right next door to Vibe. It's a massive indoor sports and game space where teens can shoot hoops, play ping-pong or take on the Incredi-Games obstacle course inspired by "The Incredibles." Pro tip: bring socks — you'll need them!
When you visit Edge or Vibe, teens get to enjoy the space their way. They can join in on group games and activities if they’re feeling social, or just hang out solo with video games, crafts or board games. Teens can also come and go as they please — no parent check-in or check-out needed. It’s total freedom to make the space whatever they want it to be.

Teen activities included with your Disney cruise fare:
- Access to Vibe and Edge teen clubs
- Pools and hot tubs, including the AquaDunk, AquaDuck or AquaMouse water coasters on select ships
- Unlimited soft drinks, soft-serve and kid-approved eats at the buffet and quick service spots. (Pizza nearly around the clock? Yes, please!)
- First-run Disney, Marvel and Pixar movies in the ship’s onboard theater
Extra cost activities:
- Smoothies or specialty drinks at Vibe
- Spa treatments for teens, such as Chill Spa on select ships
- Shore excursions — ya know the ones that appeal to older kids, such as snorkeling or zip lining.
What sets Disney apart?
Aside from the obvious — yes, your teens might still want to snap selfies with Mickey or join in on a Star Wars trivia night, but Disney nails the balance of freedom and structure. Themed events like Murder Mystery Nights or silent DJ parties in Vibe are actually cool, not cringey. And while younger kids might be more into the character meets, teens love the high production values in the live shows, deck parties and movie screenings.

Royal Caribbean
If your teen frog loves a non-stop itinerary of thrills, tech and adrenaline, then Royal Caribbean might just be the best cruise for teens in your crew. Their newest and largest ships, such as Utopia of the Seas, Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, are filled with action at every turn.
Royal Caribbean offers a teen program that divides teens into two age groups: 12-14 and 15-17. Teens can come and go from the supervised lounges and join in on scheduled activities like scavenger hunts, glow parties, outdoor movie nights and even backstage ship tours. There’s also a teen-only nightclub and social hangouts where they can dance, game or just chill with new friends.
Teen activities included with your fare:
- Access to teen lounges and daily activities. Some ships have dedicated times when onboard spaces are only open to teens.
- Pools, surf simulators (FlowRider), rock climbing walls and sports courts

From bumper cars in the SeaPlex to surfing on the FlowRider to relaxing in the teens-only lounge, there’s a rhythm and pace that fits all types of teens, whether they’re into gaming, athletics, socializing or just snapping TikToks from the top deck. Plus, the Perfect Day at CocoCay private island (included on most itineraries) has continued to expand with more beaches and upgraded experiences, keeping it a major highlight for teen cruisers.

Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival Cruise Line is often the most wallet-friendly of the big cruise lines, but that doesn’t mean it skimps on fun. Onboard programs include Circle “C” for ages 12–14 and Club O2 for teens 15–17, both offering daily events like video game tournaments, themed dances, lip-sync battles and late-night pizza parties. The clubs feel safe but unstructured, which is great for teens who want a little independence and freedom to pick activities that interest them.
Carnival's newer ships are complete with waterslides, attractions such as BOLT sea coaster, splash zones and 24/7 access to food. Teens can socialize on their own terms, and Carnival does a solid job of creating a welcoming vibe that allows teens to enjoy the amenities and activities as they wish. Newer ships like the Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee continue to lead the way with the most teen-friendly features.
Teen activities included with your Carnival cruise fare:
- Access to Circle “C” and Club O2

- Late-night movies, comedy shows and teen game nights

MSC Cruises
MSC Cruises may not be as well-known in the U.S. as other lines, but they’re quickly gaining ground — especially with teens. Onboard teen lounges are split into Young Club (ages 12–14) and Teen Club (ages 15–17), featuring sleek designs, music stations, dance floors and gaming areas.
The vibe here is stylish and global. Many activities are hosted in multiple languages, giving teens a chance to meet cruisers from all around the world. Teen-specific events include silent discos, flash mobs, sports challenges and tech-driven games using MSC’s onboard app.

If your teen is a tech-lover or just has a taste for something different, MSC’s modern ships might just be the perfect match. MSC World America and MSC Seascape have cutting-edge features like immersive simulators and interactive wristbands for navigating the ship. The cultural diversity and programming make this cruise line especially appealing to teens who want something a bit more refined but still fun.
Princess Cruises
While Princess Cruise Line is typically seen as more adult-focused, they still offer thoughtful teen programs with an emphasis on creativity, enrichment and connection. The Beach House is the lounge for teens ages 13–17 and features casual hangouts, ping pong, dance classes, video games and themed parties.
Activities include photography and video contests, mocktail mixology classes, trivia and behind-the-scenes tours. Teens looking for a bit more substance or downtime between ports will appreciate the more mature, relaxed approach.

What sets Princess apart?
This is the ideal line for teens who enjoy meaningful activities, quiet time or traveling with older family members. While Princess doesn’t have a skate park or surf simulator, it does offer a more peaceful pace, which suits many teens who’d rather unplug, read a book or snap landscape photos. Plus, Princess’s MedallionClass app makes it easy to stay connected with family and keep track of what’s happening around the ship.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is another great option for teens, especially those who like flexibility and a more independent cruise experience. Known for its “Freestyle Cruising” concept, NCL gives teens the freedom to do what they want, when they want — no strict schedules required. Teen programming is centered around Entourage (ages 13–17), which serves as the main hangout for teens onboard.
The Entourage teen lounge transforms throughout the day, offering a relaxed hangout space during the day and a teen-only nightclub vibe at night. Activities include themed parties, sports competitions, movie nights and gaming tournaments. Staff-led events are available, but the atmosphere stays casual, giving teens the freedom to participate as much or as little as they’d like.
NCL’s newer ships, including Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, bring standout attractions that really appeal to teens. From multi-level go-kart racetracks to virtual reality arcades and The Drop — a thrilling free-fall dry slide — there’s no shortage of high-energy fun onboard.
