Answering Your Frequently Asked Questions About Disney Genie and Genie Plus Services — Now Available at Disney World!

by Leap on October 19, 2021 46 Orlando

FAQs About Disney Genie - PinterestFree planning is toadally our jam ... and so is saving time! So when we initially learned about the all-new Disney Genie service at both Disneyland and Disney World, we were excited for all of the possibilities that Genie would offer, but we also had A LOT of questions.

While we pride ourselves in being theme park pros, Genie and Genie+ have thrown us a major learning curve. We hopped over to Magic Kingdom and Disney's Animal Kingdom on the launch day of Genie at Disney World to get acquainted with the new planning tool and skip-the-lines service. We'll definitely need more visits for additional research to strengthen our Genie strategies, but we were able to learn the basics rather quickly on our first day. We've got answers to some of the most common inquiries below! (No need to rub the lamp!)

Disney Genie and Genie+ FAQs: A Basic Overview and How to Purchase

What is Disney Genie?

Disney Genie is a new FREE planning tool available at both Disneyland and Disney World. (You can find Genie in the My Disney Experience app at Disney World as of Oct. 19 and the Disneyland app at Disneyland at a future date.) Guests can use this new technology to guide you through the theme parks with tips to help you reduce time in lines, discover Disney magic and take the guesswork out of planning your day. You can learn more about all that's included in the Disney Genie service in our full post here. Essentially, there are three components to Disney Genie: the free planning tool, the Genie+ paid add-on to skip the lines and individual Lightning Lane selections (at an additional cost, a la carte).

Genie FAQ — Tip Board on Phone in front of Cinderella Castle

What is Genie+?

Genie+ is a paid skip-the-line benefit that allows guests to enter through a special line (think of the former FastPass+/FASTPASS lines) rather than the standby line. Not all Disney attractions are available with Genie+, which we'll get into below — but a majority of popular Disney attractions are included with Genie+. This add-on is toadally optional. All rides continue to operate with either a standby queue or a virtual queue at no additional charge.

How much is Genie+?

Genie+ at Disney World costs $15 per person, per day. At Disneyland, Genie+ costs $20 per person, per day. This is an optional add-on service.

Tadpoles under 3 years old (who do not require a ticket for admission) would not need to purchase Genie+ to go with their party.

When can I purchase Genie+?

If you want to use the service for your entire trip, you can purchase Genie+ in advance for the length of your ticket beginning Oct. 19 at Disney World. (Psst ... save some green by purchasing through Undercover Tourist! Disney World Genie+ tickets are available now, and Disneyland is coming soon!)

It's also toadally fine if you want to use it only on certain days or decide you want to use it after all once you're at the park. You can purchase Genie+ day by day on each day of your trip using the My Disney Experience or Disneyland apps. Genie+ is available for purchase when the clock strikes midnight (Eastern) on the day of your visit, but you don't need to stay up late (unless you want to secure it before the 7 a.m. selection process). All guests can make their first Genie+ selection at 7 a.m. (Eastern).

Disneyland's Genie+ launch date is still TBD, so keep hopping back!

How does Genie+ work?

Genie+ FAQ - Big Thunder Mountain Queue

Genie+ allows guests to skip the line at the included attractions, once per day (so no unlimited access like the previous Disneyland MaxPass offering). You can begin making your Genie+ reservations beginning at 7 a.m. on the day of your visit (regardless of where you're staying). You can make your selections across all of the theme parks if you have a Park Hopper ticket (look near the bottom of the "My Day" tab where it says, "Plan for Your Next Park" to let Genie know your park hopping plans). These reservations can be made within the My Disney Experience app at Disney World and the Disneyland app at Disneyland. One big change for people who have used MaxPass or FastPass is that you can only book a particular ride once per day.

What is Lightning Lane?

Disney Genie FAQ - Lightning Lane Entrance

Lightning Lane is the name of the queue you will enter at each attraction. The FastPass entrances have been renamed Lightning Lanes at both Disneyland and Disney World (ka-chow!).

What is not included with Genie+?

Disney Genie FAQ - Radiator Springs Racer race through the desert

A few in-demand rides (and rides that utilize a virtual queue) will be excluded from Genie+. Instead, these rides will be available for an additional price per ride, such as Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers. These a la carte options can be purchased same-day, in-park (though virtual queues will still be available at no cost for select attractions). You can use a pay-per-ride for a particular attraction once per day and pay to upgrade for up to two different rides per day (regardless of where you are staying).

Do you have to purchase Genie+ to buy individual Lightning Lane selections?

No, you do not need to have Genie+ to purchase individual Lightning Lane selections. (You can opt for one or the other, or purchase both skip-the-line options.)

Which attractions are included as individual Lightning Lane selections?

Genie FAQs - Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Individual Lightning Lane selections at Disney World include:

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  • Space Mountain
  • Frozen Ever After
  • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
  • Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
  • Avatar Flight of Passage
  • Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain

Individual Lightning Lane selections at Disneyland include:

  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
  • Radiator Springs Racers
  • WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure

Can Genie+ rides "sell out"?

Genie+ rides are not guaranteed. The most popular rides can run out of available Genie+ Lightning Lane selections. We saw this later in the day at Hollywood Studios when Lightning Lane for Slinky Dog Dash and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run were "Not currently offered."  Don't give up hope on them though! You might see more availability pop up later, possibly due to cancellations. Act quickly on those if you see them.

How much are individual Lightning Lane selections?

Pricing and availability may vary by date, attraction and park. For example, Lightning Lane access to Remy's Ratatouille Adventure was $9 per person Oct. 19 and $11 per person Oct. 23. On those same dates, Expedition Everest would be $7 per person, while Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance would be $15 per person. A cast member at a Guest Experience kiosk confirmed that prices would stay between $7 and $15 on any given day, however. You can see the price before you pay.

Can individual Lightning Lane selections sell out?

Yes. Once all the available add-on rides slots are filled, the individual Lightning Lane box will say, "Not currently offered."

Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane Selection Process FAQs

How do you select a time window for a Genie+ ride?

Disney Genie and Genie+ FAQs - Screenshot of Selecting a Genie+ Time for Big Thunder Mountain

For Genie+ rides, navigate to your "Tip Board" where you can only book the next available time window, which could be as soon as five minutes later or hours away. You cannot make them in advance for times that are later in the day. Click on "Book Experience." The next page will confirm the arrival window, show if you have any overlapping plans and you can adjust your party, if needed, before you officially book it.

How soon can you make another Genie+ ride selection if you can only get one at a time?

You can make your next Genie+ ride selection once you've scanned in at the two touchpoints in the Lightning Lane queue of your first ride. For example, we rode Pirates of the Caribbean as our very first Genie+ ride of the day. After scanning our MagicBands at the two touchpoints, we were able to get a Genie+ selection for Haunted Mansion while we were waiting for our Pirates boat at the loading area.

But what if my Genie+ return time window is more than two hours away?

There is an exception to the "one-at-a-time" rule for Genie+ selections. Like we mentioned before, you can only select the next available time. So, if it's a particularly busy day, you might find that, when you're looking at noon, the next available time for a popular ride could be 7 p.m. Snag it anyway! Your ability to make Genie+ selections will be frozen for two hours, but starting at 2 p.m., you can make another Genie+ selection for another ride.

Can you book more than one experience?

You can only hold one Genie+ selection at a time, but you can purchase an individual Lightning Lane selection that overlaps with a Genie+ selection.

It's also possible to join a virtual queue AND purchase an Individual Lightning Lane selection for the same ride, thus granting you the ability to ride twice in a day.

Speaking of individual Lightning Lane selections, is that process different?

Disney Genie and Genie+ FAQs - Individual Lightning Lane Selection Process Screenshot

Yes! For individual Lightning Lane selections, you can select any of the available time windows that pop up, which range throughout the day. For best availability, select at 7 a.m. if you're a Disney hotel guest or a guest of select hotels, or right at the park open, if not. It will show any overlapping plans and allow you to edit your party, if needed.

How does Genie+ work if you're park hopping?

Let Genie know that you're park hopping by going to the "My Day" tab and selecting which park(s) you'll be hopping to and during which hours, so Genie can make recommendations based on your park hopping plans.

We also found out that if you try making a Genie+ selection for your second park, you can still make one while you're at your first park. For example, we tried making a reservation for Na'vi River Journey while we were still at Magic Kingdom, right at noon. But wait, the next time available window for Na'vi River Journey was 12:30 p.m. How is that possible? We wanted to see if we could book it anyway, so once we clicked on "Book Experience," the arrival time window automatically changed to 2 to 3 p.m. due to park hopping! At that time, our Genie+ ability would freeze for two hours, so we wouldn't have been able to make any more Genie+ reservations at Magic Kingdom. This was just a test for us, so we canceled the Na'vi River Journey reservation in order to make another one at Magic Kingdom.

What if I change my mind?

You cannot modify an existing Genie+ selection, but you can cancel and reserve a different time or attraction. Once you hit cancel, you can remove select members of your party (if someone has changed their mind) or cancel it for everyone. We suggest that you need to be certain about canceling the reservation because the next available time window for that ride could be much later in the day or even unavailable! You can check the Genie+ availability status for the current time window being offered before you cancel.

If you cancel a Genie+ reservation, did you use your only chance for that ride?

No! Because you can only use Genie+ access once per ride, you do need to cancel it if you wish to change your arrival time. From the previous park hopping example above, once we actually hopped to Animal Kingdom around 3:20 p.m., we successfully made a new reservation for Na'vi River Journey at 3:30 p.m. as we entered the park.

If you miss your window and did not successfully cancel it, you will not be able to make another reservation for that ride. We tested this out with Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, and let our Genie+ arrival window pass. The reservation did not disappear right away, but when we checked 15 minutes later, it was gone. We attempted to make another but could not because we were ineligible since we "used" it already.

Can you be early or late to your Genie+ or individual Lightning Lane reservation?

The arrival windows are meant to be firm, and therefore you need to get there on time. (We were able to scan into the first touchpoint at Haunted Mansion five minutes early though.) If you're late, the cast members may not be able to let you through. If it's an instance that's out of your control (such as a different ride breaking down that caused you to be late), we suggest kindly explaining the situation, but it's up to the discretion of the cast members at the ride entrance.

What if the ride that you have a Genie+ or individual Lightning Lane selection for breaks down?

Don't worry! There are certain recovery efforts that the cast members will be able to implement, in case this happens. For instance, if you paid for an individual Lightning Lane selection that you haven't used yet but it breaks down and never reopens, a refund or gift card may be offered. If the ride breaks down after you've already scanned in and are waiting in line, then you may not be able to get a refund, but they could issue a multiple experience pass or a different return time window instead. Cast members will take care of you!

Is Genie+ available during Early Theme Park Entry or Extended Evening Hours?

No, Genie+ and the Individual Lightning Lane selections are only available during normal park hours.

Miscellaneous Disney Genie and Genie+ FAQs

Disney Genie FAQ - Phone and Castle

Is Genie+ different at Disneyland and Disney World?

Yes! Genie+ at Disney World costs $15 per person, per day and does not include PhotoPass (you'll still need to spring for Memory Maker if you want unlimited photos!). Disney World guests get Disney PhotoPass lenses included. At Disneyland, Genie+ costs $20 per person, per day and includes unlimited PhotoPass downloads but no PhotoPass lenses.

What else is included in Genie+?

Aside from Lightning Lane access, Genie+ includes augmented reality photo lenses at Disney World and audio experiences at both resorts. Disneyland guests with Genie+ also get unlimited PhotoPass downloads.

Do Disney Resort Hotel guests get any perks related to Genie+?

Remember those individual, a la carte Lightning Lane options we talked about? Disney World Resort hotel guests will be able to make those reservations as early as 7 a.m. on the day of their visit (versus the general public who cannot reserve until park opening). That's a huge advantage for hotel guests, as popular rides may run out of reservation windows. All guests, regardless of where they stay, are limited to a maximum of two pay-per-ride attractions per day and can only book a particular ride once per day.

What about Annual Passholders?

Previously, Disneyland Annual Passholders were able to add MaxPass to their pass for a flat rate each year. So far, no AP or Magic Key add-ons have been announced.

If we have unused pre-COVID tickets purchased with MaxPass, can we use them as Genie+?

No. Call Disneyland ticketing at (714) 520-6222 or (714) 781-4636 to hear about your options. You can also submit an inquiry to Guest Services via email (select "Disney MaxPass Refunds" from the subject drop-down menu). You'll need your ticket number to submit your inquiry before your tickets expire.

Can we purchase tickets pre-loaded with Genie+?

You sure can! You can purchase Disney World and Disneyland (coming soon!) tickets with Genie+.

Can I add Genie+ to my existing Walt Disney World ticket purchased through Undercover Tourist?

Yes – but modifying your existing ticket from Undercover Tourist will void the Undercover Tourist refund policy. Once you modify your ticket, all future changes must be handled by Disney. Undercover Tourist can no longer service your order.

How do I add Genie+ to my existing Walt Disney World ticket, prior to the start date of my reservation?

Please note that modifying your existing ticket from Undercover Tourist will void the Undercover Tourist refund policy. There are three ways to add Genie+ to your existing ticket:

  • My Disney Experience – You may add-on Genie+ through the My Disney Experience app. Prior to the start date of your reservation, you will have to add Genie+ for each day of your reservation for your whole reservation party.
  • Disney Customer Service – You may call Disney customer service and add on Genie+. Prior to the start date of your reservation, you will have to add Genie+ for each day of your reservation for your whole reservation party.
  • You may contact Undercover Tourist with your order details and request a refund/cancellation per our ticket refund policy.

I only want to add Genie+ on select days, for certain people in my reservation, with my existing tickets. Is this possible?

Please note that modifying your existing ticket from Undercover Tourist will void the Undercover Tourist refund policy. On the start date of your reservation, you may select a daily add-on for Genie+ in the My Disney Experience app for individual tickets and people in your reservation party.

You probably need to link tickets within the app.

Our experience was that everyone using the app should link all tickets within their app.

This will make everything easier if at anytime anyone has connectivity issues, or their hands full, or just whatever. Then anyone else in the party can pull up tickets, access reservations, etc.

Hi Fred!

That is correct - certain attractions at both resorts (WEB Slingers at Disney California Adventure Park and Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland Park; and Remy's Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT) also offer a free virtual queue to access the ride (the virtual queue acts as a lottery system, so there's some prep involved!). We have guides to Virtual Queues at Walt Disney World and Virtual Queues at Disneyland to walk you through the steps at either resort. Hope this helps!

We are staying at the Portofino in Universal and Yacht Club at Disney. Both 4 star hotels linked to the parks. The difference is we get Fast Pass (or what ever you want to call it) included at Universal but not at Disney , who is offering the best value for money . I leave it up to you to decide . I know what I think.

Hello! We are travelling from Australia next July 2022 to Disneyland. The dates are the 2-6th July. Given we have plenty of time, do you think we need the park hopper tickets and planning on buying 4-day pass? Second question, I know these dates co-incide with 4th July. What are the crowds typically like and how can we make sure that we get on the new Star Wars rides over this time given its the main reason for our visit and never experienced Star Wars Land before. Is it as easy as buying a Lightning Lane pass with Genie+ pass?

Reply
Oct 13, 2021 at 9:08 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Adriana!

The crowds are usually high for the Fourth of July, particularly Magic Kingdom and EPCOT which both have special Fourth of July fireworks. We'd weigh flexibility versus time spent for traveling between parks. Park hoppers would give you more flexibility (if one park is super busy, you could hop to another), but depending on crowds, it may be easier to stick to one park per day as it could take some time to hop between parks due to longer waits for transportation. Yes, getting both Genie+ (for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run) and an Individual Lightning Lane selection for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance would be one of the best ways to get access to the Star Wars rides.

Piggybacking on what Dan asked, is there a chance that a rides lightning lane will sell out like the old fast pass or will it be unlimited? If they do sell out you’re still running the risk of not getting a popular ride right away, or at all.

Hi Mike!

We're here to give you an update for your question! To clarify, the Genie+ service itself cannot sell out. However, a certain Genie+ ride could theoretically run out of time windows. We saw this happen with Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Slinky Dog Dash, but more times could potentially pop up again due to cancellations (so keep an eye out for those and act quickly if you see one pop up after not being available!). The individual Lightning Lane selections can also sell out.

Hi Chris!

Disney Genie is the free planning tool which includes features such as a personalized tip board (based on your interests), forecasted future wait times, mobile ordering, restaurant wait lists and reservations, virtual queues and a virtual assistant — all in one spot for easy access in the My Disney Experience app for Disney World (or the Disneyland app for Disneyland). Genie+ is an upgrade that allows you to skip the lines at select attractions.

How far ahead in the day will genie + reservations be made?

In the days of FastPass, for popular rides, you might not get a reservation until very late in the day, like around 8pm. This meant you were “handcuffed” to that reservation, and you couldn’t do any others until that one was used. Will this be the case with Genie +?

Reply
Oct 12, 2021 at 11:58 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Dan!

Guests with Genie+ service can make their first ride selection beginning at 7 a.m. (regardless of where you're staying, on-site or off-site). Though you can only make one reservation at a time throughout the day. Once the selection is redeemed or the arrival window passes, you can make another selection.

For the individual Lightning Lane attraction selections (rides that aren't included with Genie+), then it varies. If you're a guest of a Disney Resort Hotel (or other select hotels such as Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels and Shades of Green), then you can make your two selections at the same time, starting at 7 a.m. All other guests can make these individual Lighting Lane attraction selections once the park opens for the day.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, but that didn’t really answer my question. Maybe you didn’t understand. Let’s say I really want to ride Tower of Terror and don’t want to do stand by, so I try to make a Genie+ reservation. But the only reservation available is at 8:30pm, 30 minutes before park closing. If I choose this reservation, then I can’t use Genie+ again until I’ve done Tower of Terror. So, basically I’m buying Genie+ for the one ride.

So, my question is - How long in advance do they allow you to make reservations? I’m not sure I want to buy Genie+ if all the Genie+ reservations for the day are gonna be gobbled up in the first few minutes of the day.

Hi Dan!

We're back with an answer to clarify the Genie+ selection process. You can only book the next available time window for Genie+ ride selections (versus the individual Lightning Lane attractions, which you can pick from the available time windows throughout the day). Back to Genie+, the next available time window could be five minutes later, or it could be hours later, depending on the ride and how busy it is. If you get a time window that is five minutes away, you can get in line right when the window opens and be able to select another Genie+ ride as soon as you've scanned in at the two touchpoints in the Lightning Lane queue (so theoretically, you could have your second Genie+ selection within minutes of using your first).

If the time window happens to be hours away (say, at noon, you make a Genie+ reservation for Slinky Dog Dash at 5 p.m.), then your ability to make another Genie+ selection is "frozen" for two hours. At 2 p.m., you would be able to make a second Genie+ selection, even though you haven't gone on Slinky Dog yet. Then you must use that one before making another.

Hi Betsy!

We're back with some more answers for you!

1) It is possible to join a Boarding Group for a virtual queue AND purchase an individual Lightning Lane selection for the same ride.

2) We were able to make individual Lightning Lane selections for both Seven Dwarfs and Expedition Everest just after 9 a.m. (note: the park must be open for whichever ride(s) you're attempting to get). In our example, both parks were already open, but say if we were planning to hop to EPCOT, which opened later, instead of Animal Kingdom, we would've need to wait to make a reservation for Remy's or Frozen Ever After until EPCOT opened.

3) No! You can let Genie know about your park hopping plans.

4) You can have overlapping times for Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane selections.

4. In general, you can purchase both Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane attraction selections! We're just not exactly sure yet if they can have overlapping times or if Genie will show you already have plans if you try to book them during the same time frame.

I agree. Disney was never cheap, but when we went to Universal Orlando pre-covid, there wasn't any point in being there after 11am. The stand by line did not move while the premium guests just kept walking up to ride. Now Disney has gone down the route of the Lexus lanes on the highway and there is no point for average people to go there anymore. It's sad to see something that used to be accessible taken away from people who just can not spent another $15x5=$75 each time they want to go on a ride. Sad, sad, sad, Disney is now just another elitist luxury.

I have to agree with Jessica, I and my family have been going to Disney World for 25 years and this charge for the formerly free fast pass is just a bad money grab, considering the prices already. Disney is going to price themselves out of alot of business

Any insight as to when this launches in Disneyland? We are there the 18-21, sounds like we'll miss that launch, correct?

Hi Eric!

The Disneyland launch date for Genie is still to be determined. So far, we only know that it will be sometime this fall, though we anticipate it would follow after the launch at Disney World.

How will those who cannot stand in line (handicapped, etc) be handled - it used to use the fastpass system?

Hi Beth!

While we don't know all of the exact details yet, the Disability Access Service is not going away! In fact, there will be a new feature within Disney Genie to allow those enrolled in DAS to request return times instead of having to physically go to an experience or to a kiosk to obtain a return time from a cast member. We'll update when we know more!

Howdy,

For those of us with reservations between now and October 19th when Genie launches, is there any ride reservation system at all? Seems like Fast Pass is already gone?

Hi Chris!

That's correct - FastPass has been retired, so no skip-the-line service will be in place until Oct. 19 with Genie's debut.

Hoppy planning!

Good morning Frog Family, so if you get the paid Genie+ do you get to make all your reservations for the day as soon as you enter the parks? Or is it like MaxPass was where you could only choose one ride at a time throughout the day?

Hi Samantha!

All guests can make their first Lightning Lane selection with Genie+ at 7 a.m. on the day of their visit; from there, ride selections can be made one at a time.

That’s a lot of info!! Fantastic job covering this new feature! I do have one question. In the past the fast passes were limited to 3 a day and such… for this I see it’s once per day for each ride, but is there a limit? Like if magic kingdom has 8 rides for lightning lane, can I reserve for all 8 or do I have to be selective?

Thanks so much, Brittany! :) While you are limited to making one reservation at a time with Genie+, and can only ride each attraction once, there is no limit to how many you can ride (as many as you can pack into your day, as long as there are no duplicates, is A-OK!).

Disney prices are already so crazy. It’s very disappointing that they are charging per ride on certain rides so that you don’t have to wait in the super long standby line. A service that was just FREE! Sadly this December’s trip will have to be our last. This trip was a huge splurge for us and we have officially been priced out of Disney.

I feel the same. There will be those who will do it and cut out something else. I think Mr. Disney would be sad to see average people unable to afford a trip and children miss out on the “magic.”

I would not worry too much folks. we were just there in a late september, post school start trip, and there were no need for lighting at all. Rise of the resistance was 50 min all day, and everything else, except for Remy Ratat was 20 mins max
