Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2024 and 2025

Inside This Post Inside This Post

You long-time frog fans know Tad as our official Frog Family videographer. While he toadally enjoys making ride videos for our YouTube channel, he really has set his sights on becoming the next Spielberg. For him, it doesn't get any better than Universal Studios Hollywood. It's a thrill for him to be "on location" inside the theme park that just so hoppens to be where "Back to the Future" and "Psycho" were filmed. And we know he's not the only one who's excited to visit! With the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more family-friendly attractions, this theme park/working studio sure is more hopping than ever! Plus, we get to explore Super Nintendo World. Woohoo! Whether you have a filmmaker in your family or you're just a bunch of fun-seekers, it helps to know not only what to expect when visiting Universal Studios Hollywood, but also, when to plan your trip in 2024 and 2025. And, action!

Planning When to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2024 and 2025

While there is no reservation system in place at Universal Studios Hollywood, tickets are date-based, effectively limiting capacity each day through the number of tickets sold.

That means it's important to purchase your tickets ahead of time so that your preferred dates aren't sold out. And one other piece of advice: During our recent trips, Express Passes have become more useful than ever in maximizing our time at the park. Much like admission, it's best to purchase your Express Passes in advance (they can sell out, and more so, the advanced online price is usually the lowest). Psst ... Undercover Tourist can save you some green on your tickets, as well as Express Pass!

Another hopful tool for people who want to get the most out of their visit to Super Nintendo World is Early Access. You can purchase this add-on separately from your theme park admission, but you must have theme park admission to use the Early Access ticket. No matter when you visit, this ticket gets you into Super Nintendo World an hour before the park opens, allowing you to access all the challenges with short lines and Mario Kart with the shortest line of the day. Then, at park opening, you can use our Universal Studios Hollywood park plan to maximize time for the rest of the park.

Other Factors to Consider When Determining the Best Time to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

If you’re used to visiting Universal Orlando Resort rather than the Hollywood original, know that there are some differences. The best times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2024 and 2025 aren't necessarily the same ones at Universal Orlando.

The biggest difference is the locals. Universal Orlando has locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles regional area. More and more of these locals are annual passholders, who think nothing of popping in for a pint of Butterbeer after the end of a long week. A lot of passholders visit on Saturdays, so that may influence you to visit during the week if you can.

While the regional passholders have a large influence on crowds, it's not all doom and gloom. Many passholders have blackout times during the times most popular with tourists — mostly summer, spring break and the holidays, but also a few weekends here and there. Looking at Universal's passholder blackout calendars gives you a fairly good idea of the very busiest dates of the year. This is because these are the times when most of the passholders are not allowed to enter.

Other major contributing factors include school breaks, special events such as Halloween Horror Nights and the holidays and big openings. In 2024 and 2025, there aren't any confirmed openings, but a new "Fast & Furious"-themed roller coaster is currently under construction. When this one opens, consider it a family reunion — with lots of people wanting to ride! In the meantime, the park remains busy due to Super Nintendo World, which opened in early 2023.

Spring — February, March, April

Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood - Studio Tour

Highlights

While Lunar New Year is an understated event at Universal Studios Hollywood, you can enjoy special decor, food and beverage options in the park from late January through February. You can purchase Lunar New Year merchandise in the gift shops. Celebrate by taking a photo with characters, such as Hello Kitty, dressed in their Lunar New Year best.

During select spring break weeks, you may experience Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle. The projection show usually returns for evenings during spring break.

Things to Consider

The fall of Easter impacts Universal crowds in the spring. Some school districts base their spring break around Easter; others do not. When Easter falls earlier in the season, in March or early April, it has the effect of making a more intense, but shorter spring break season. That's the case in 2024, when Easter is March 31. When Easter falls later, the effect is a longer but less intense spring break season. In 2025, Easter hoppens April 20, so this spring break season will be longer. Many California universities consistently have spring break at the end of March, which can affect crowds then.

Our Overall Pick: First week of March or second half of April

Least Busy

  • February
    • Weekdays in February (minus the days around Presidents Day) - 2024
    • Feb. 1-13, 18-28, 2025
  • First week of March
    • March 1-8, 2024
    • March 1-6, 2025
  • Second half of April
    • April 8-25, 2024
    • April 21-30, 2025

Busiest

  • Presidents Day Weekend
    • Feb. 16-19, 2024
    • Feb. 10-17, 2025
  • Spring Break
    • March 9 - April 7, 2024
    • March 7 - April 6, 2025 & April 18-20, 2025 (Easter)

Summer — May, June, July

Best Time to Go to Universal Studios Hollywood - Jurassic World

Highlights

Summer break unofficially begins with Memorial Day weekend and crowds remain steady until back-to-school season. There aren't any major events, but Universal has some low-key celebrations for Grad Bash, Pride Month and Fourth of July. The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle show returns for select nights of summer, usually mid-June to mid-August.

Things to Consider

May and June are the cooler and more comfortable summer months to visit, with "May Gray" and "June Gloom" morning clouds keeping the park from heating up too much. Temperatures rise in sunny July. Park hours are long once summer hits, so you have time to get it all done.

Our Overall Pick: Weekdays in May

Least Busy

  • Weekdays in May (minus days around Memorial Day)
  • First half of June

Busiest

  • Weekends in May (particularly Memorial Day weekend)
  • Second half of June
  • July

Fall — August, September, October

Highlights

Bring on your worst nightmares. Halloween Horror Nights is the biggest event of the year at Universal Studios Hollywood. Terror unleashes inside the park with elaborate haunted houses, scare zones and the Studio Tour's transformation into the Terror Tram.

Things to Consider

Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood-Kids in splash area

Something to keep in mind if you visit weekends in September and October is Halloween Horror Nights. This separately ticketed event takes place after park hours on select nights. If you visit during the day on those days, you'll see more crowds coming in starting at 2 p.m. The parks may close earlier than usual by about 6 p.m. Hop over to our guide to Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood to learn more.

Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood-Scary props during the day in the fall.

Even though the scare actors and haunted houses are not open until Halloween Horror Nights begin, some scary props and skeletons are out during the day. Just be aware if you are bringing sensitive small children with you in the fall.

  • Yom Kippur (when it falls on a weekday) - Oct. 11, 2024
  • Indigenous Peoples' Day - Oct. 14, 2024
  • Utah and Arizona fall breaks during the first half of October

The park is not as busy during the day in the fall, as most crowds come for Halloween Horror Nights. But watch out for the park closing at 6 p.m. for the after-hours event. That means arriving early in the morning to accomplish everything in a shorter period of time.

Also, note the weather. While other places start to cool down, things are just getting heated up in Los Angeles in August and September. Hot summer weather can extend into early October. So dress accordingly and seek out the soak zone at WaterWorld if you need to cool off. Bring swimsuits and water shoes for the tadpoles to enjoy the water play area in Super Silly Fun Land.

Our Overall Pick: The second half of August and early September (minus the days around Labor Day weekend) sees low crowds as the tadpoles hop back to school.

Least Busy

  • Weekdays during the last two weeks of August
  • First half of September (minus days around Labor Day); Tuesdays through Thursdays for the remainder of September

Busiest

  • First half of August
    • Aug. 1-11, 2024
  • Labor Day Weekend
    • Aug. 30 - Sept. 2, 2024
    • Aug. 29 - Sept. 1, 2025
  • October 2024
  • Elevated crowds from Sept. 22 to Oct. 31, 2025

Winter — November, December, January

'Tis the season to spread Who-liday cheer ... the crowds may be here, but have no fear! While yes, Universal Studios Hollywood can see its busiest weeks of the year around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, it's a magical sight to see Hogsmeade decked out in garland and celebrate with Who-ville citizens.

Highlights

The Holidays at Universal Studios Hollywood is the main highlight as the season typically kicks off the day after Thanksgiving. Universal is decorated with colorful lights, bows, ornaments and more. Plus, you even get the chance to meet the Grinch and his dog, Max!

Things to Consider

Aside from the major holidays, there are a couple other small holidays to keep in mind:

  • Veterans Day (Nov. 11 — a Monday in 2024 and a Tuesday in 2025)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 15, 2024, and Jan. 20, 2025)

During the first half of December, weekends may have more people than during the week, but crowd levels are not as bad as during the big holiday week between Christmas and New Year's. Plus, the park also has longer hours and more evening entertainment on weekends.

Our Overall Pick: If the holiday festivities are a must for you, we'd recommend the first week or two of December, which is right before the majority of schools are out for holiday breaks. However, if visiting during the lowest crowds is the bigger priority, January is best.

Least Busy

  • January
    • Weekdays in January (minus the week of New Year's Day and the days around Martin Luther King Jr. Day) - 2024
    • Jan. 7-15, 21-31, 2025
  • November (minus the week of Thanksgiving and the days around Veterans Day)
  • First half of December

Busiest

  • The week of New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day
    • Jan. 1-9, 12-15, 2024
    • Jan. 1-6, 17-20, 2025
  • Veterans Day
    • Nov. 8-11, 2024
    • Nov. 11, 2025
  • Week of Thanksgiving
    • Nov. 22 - Dec. 1, 2024
    • Nov. 22-30, 2025
  • Week of Christmas and New Year's
    • Dec. 21-31, 2024
    • Dec. 20, 2025, to Jan. 4, 2026

We’re planning to visit during the day on Halloween this year with an Express Pass. Thinking about doing early park entry to see the Harry Potter things the pass does not cover. How does that work? They will let us enter the park even though it’s not open? Are all the Harry Potter attractions open early?

Love your website-thanks for all the good information!

Hi Dianne!

In the past, Early Entry came when you purchased a ticket or Universal Partner Hotel Package online from UniversalStudiosHollywood.com. Guests then received Early Park Admission to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter 30 minutes prior to the Theme Park’s posted opening time each day. However, details past Sept. 2 are no longer available - we'll keep our eyes and ears open for more details!

How much are express passes for season pass holders?

Reply
Sep 4, 2019 at 5:12 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Steven!

It can vary per night and per pass. There is a section for passholders to click on the ticketing page. You have to type in your pass to see the discounts that apply to you. We did not get any discount for our Express Pass on Fan Preview night. In the past, we have not gotten discounts on Express Passes either, but it can vary so type in your pass to see what discounts you can get.

Hi Nic!

It’s hard to predict, but with daytime park guests mixing with Halloween Horror Nights guests, the lines could be long, although it’s not a Peak Time. We highly recommend Express Pass, which is good during the day and at night because you’ll need it for the mazes anyway.

Thanks for the awesome site. I'm contemplating a VIP pass for Universal Studios but wondering 1) if even need it with our dates, 2) if we do, which would be better, Friday 25th of Jan or Sat 26th Jan. and 3) is there even any live filming on at Sat?

Reply
Aug 26, 2019 at 11:46 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Elizabeth!

Either day should be a great time to visit. While the VIP may not be necessary, it does have some cool perks and areas you cannot otherwise access. There is usually no live filming on Saturday. When there is live filming, besides Mario Live, you don’t usually see it, but are more likely to avoid those areas on the Studio Tour. Weekends may give you more access to the full backlot.

Hi! We are heading to LA on August 23rd and our plan was go to Universal on Monday Aug 26th. I just noticed that you mention to go on WEEKENDS for the second half of August!

Why is this? Would lines be better if we went on the Sunday instead?

It looks like ticket prices are higher on the weekends so I just assumed it would be more crowded.

Let me know! Thanks :)

Hi everyone

I am planning a California Park trip in late January to early February 2020. I will visit the parks mainly Monday through Friday to avoid the queues as much as possible.

Also, I will buy express tickets where possible.

I'm just not sure how much time I have to count for the parks.

I thought: Disneyland 3 days, Universal Studios 2 days, Six Flags MM 2 days, Knott's 1 day. Is that ok or too much? As a comparison in Orlando I did the same in 2018 and I had 4 1/2 days for WDW and 2 1/2 days for Universal Studios Orlando (with unlimited express pass) and it was almost too much. I'm less interested in the shows, mainly at the rides.

Three days at Disneyland sounds great. You can probably get by with one day at each of the other parks, especially if you get Universal Express at Universal Studios and mostly care about rides.

Hi Thandi!

That day is slated to be a 10/10 in terms of crowds, according to our Crowd Calendar, so we'd spring for the Express Pass if you're able.

Hi, we are trying to decide between either Nov. 11th (Veterans Day) or Nov. 16th (a Saturday). The crowd calendar actually indicates the Saturday would be better. Does Veterans Day get pretty packed? Which day would be better? Thanks

Hi Lee,

Both of those dates shouldn't be too bad. I would pick the one that works better for you and your family.

Hi, we are going to Universal on the 18th June, its not the best according to your calendar but we don't have a choice. Does the Universal Express Ticket apply to everything in the park or just the rides. My wife an I will go but are not interested in the rides so were going to get normal tickets and then the Express for our 2 kids. But we want to do the studio tours so would the kids jump to the front and we'd have to wait? Thanks Haydn

Hi Haydn!

We toadally understand - sometimes, the best time to go is just when you're able! The Universal Studios Hollywood Express Pass is a full ticket that includes admission to Universal Studios Hollywood, plus one-time access to each ride, show and attraction - which sounds like it'd be exactly what you're looking for! Enjoy!

hello,

we have the choice of either going to universal studios hollywood on august 31 or sept 1. the crowd calendar has them both at 8/10 - is one day generally less busy?

also, do they sell out of the express passes online? if we chose to wait until the day of to upgrade to an express pass would that be too late?

Thanks.

Hi there!

Being that it is a holiday weekend, both days could be busy. Universal may run out of Express passes in the park that day if demand is high enough. We recommend taking advantage of savings and guaranteeing availability by purchasing in advance.

Hi- we are planning on going to Universal Hollywood on Christmas 2019- I know it will be packed, but I was going to get the express passes. What will it be like?even on a day like that, do you pretty much go right in the front of the line for your one time ride?is it worth doing

Hi Aaron!

The Express Pass is definitely worth doing at a peak crowd time like that. You will save a lot of time vs. waiting in lines. Express Pass sales are limited, so you should have very short to no wait. Have a frogtastic time!

Hi, I noticed that the annual pass is not blocked for June 2 - 3 2019 but it is listed as a peak day on the calendar. Information I read indicated that crowds are usually worse during the black-out dates. It also indicates that mid June - early August are among the worst days so we are outside that window. Just trying to decide if it is worth it because we are on a budget and that extra 70.00 per person for a family of 5 is questionable. We are planning just a one day visit to the park. Looking for some advise....

Hi! Thanks for all of the great info! I'm surprised to see that you have Memorial Day listed as a 5/10 in terms of crowds. With the park being open late that day it seems like a good day to visit- but I would've thought that would be a super crowded day (all other Monday holidays have much higher crowd ratings). Is the holiday factored in to the 5/10 rating? Or, any suggestions/tips from previous experience on that day?? Thank you!!

Hi Lori,

I'm sorry to report that is an error and we have adjusted it, but as the holidays go, we don't think this Memorial Day will be too bad.

It looks like what you’re saying is Easter Sunday is crowded. Is this true? I thought it would be quieter since most people are celebrating at restaurants and going to church.

Hi Annie,

It is more crowded on holidays such as Easter. Many families that have the days around the holiday end up taking vacations and visiting the park.

Should we buy unlimited passes to skip the lines for all rides for the day on May 20th, or should we just get normal tickets. We don't know what the crowd would be like on that day

Hi Eduardo!

The 29th looks to be slightly less busy than the 30th (6/10 vs. 7/10). If you can spring for an Express pass, we always recommend it because it gives you more time to hop around the park rather than waiting in line :)

what is the price for express pass at universal studios at the gate compare to buying them on the site?

Reply
Mar 20, 2019 at 4:06 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Estella!

You can find online prices for the tickets with the Express option here via Universal. The price can vary at the park, and if the crowds are higher than expected, the price goes up. Expect prices to be higher and availability to be lower at the park. We have seen it be $70 to add on in the park, but that may be different when you visit. It can go up as the day goes on, so it’s hard to say for certain.
