Inside This Post Inside This Post

You long-time frog fans know Tad as our official Frog Family videographer. While he toadally enjoys making ride videos for our YouTube channel, he really has set his sights on becoming the next Spielberg. For him, it doesn't get any better than Universal Studios Hollywood. It's a thrill for him to be "on location" inside the theme park that just so hoppens to be where "Back to the Future" and "Psycho" were filmed. And we know he's not the only one who's excited to visit! With the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more family-friendly attractions, this theme park/working studio sure is more hopping than ever! Plus, we get to explore Super Nintendo World. Woohoo! Whether you have a filmmaker in your family or you're just a bunch of fun-seekers, it helps to know not only what to expect when visiting Universal Studios Hollywood, but also, when to plan your trip. And, action!

When to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 and 2024

Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023

While there is no reservation system in place at Universal Studios Hollywood, tickets are date-based, effectively limiting capacity each day through the number of tickets sold.

That means it's important to purchase your tickets ahead of time so that your preferred dates aren't sold out. And one other piece of advice: During our recent trips, Express Passes have become more useful than ever in maximizing our time at the parks. Much like admission, it's best to purchase your Express Passes in advance (they can sell out, and more so, the advanced online price is usually the lowest). (Psst ... Undercover Tourist can save you some green on your tickets, as well as Express Pass!)

Undercover Tourist's #1 ranked Crowd Calendar will show you projected crowd levels, events taking place and even the average weather, all in one place!

Our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar is the best tool to help you get a day-by-day look at expected crowds a full year in advance. If your particular dates are not listed, jump down to the comments below and ask. We frogs will be hoppy to answer. We've got a similar post devoted to the best and worst times to visit Disneyland if you hoppen to be planning visits to both. (Now, if only we could predict travel times on those SoCal highways!)

How Locals Influence the Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 and 2024

If you’re used to visiting Universal Orlando Resort rather than the Hollywood original, know that there are some differences. The best times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 and 2024 aren't necessarily the same ones at Universal Orlando.

The biggest difference is the locals. Universal Orlando has locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles regional area. More and more of these locals are annual passholders, who think nothing of popping in for a pint of Butterbeer after the end of a long week. A lot of passholders visit on Saturdays, so that may influence you to visit during the week if you can.

While the regional passholders have a large influence on crowds, it's not all doom and gloom. Many passholders have blackout times during the times most popular with tourists — mostly summer, spring break and the holidays, but also a few weekends here and there. Looking at Universal's Silver Annual Pass available days calendar gives you a fairly good idea of the very busiest dates of the year. This is because these are the times when most of the passholders are not allowed to enter.

Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood - Secret Life of Pets

Now let's hop into the key topic at hand — the dates of the best and worst times for crowds at Universal Studios Hollywood. The big draw this year is going to be the opening of Super Nintendo World Feb. 17, 2023. Hop over to our full guide to see all that we know about Super Nintendo World. With the 100 Years of Wonder celebration kicking off at Disneyland in late January 2023, we expect February and March to be busier than usual in the greater Los Angeles area. Likewise, summer breaks are a big draw at Universal Studios Hollywood. Summer breaks are a big draw for visitors, as well.

Expected Busiest Days at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023

Here are the days we expect to be the busiest at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023:

  • Jan. 1-8, Jan. 13-16
  • Feb. 17-20
  • March 11 - April 16
  • Weekends in May, plus Memorial Day
  • Second half of June
  • July
  • Aug. 1-13
  • Sept. 1-4; Sept. 22-25
  • Oct. 2-23
  • Nov. 17-26
  • Dec. 17-31

Expected Busiest Days at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2024

Here are the days we expect to be the busiest at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2024:

  • Jan. 1-7, Jan. 12-15
  • Feb. 16-19
  • March 9 - April 7
  • Weekends in May, plus Memorial Day
  • Second half of June
  • July
  • Aug. 1-11
  • Aug. 30 - Sept. 2
  • Oct. 2-14
  • Nov. 22 - Dec. 1
  • Dec. 21-31

*The fall of Easter impacts Universal crowds in the spring. Some school districts base their spring break around Easter; others do not. When Easter falls earlier in the season, March or early April, it has the effect of making a more intense, but shorter spring break season. That's the case in both 2023, when Easter is April 9, and 2024, when Easter is March 31. When Easter falls later, the effect is a longer but less intense spring break season. Many California universities consistently have spring break at the end of March, which can affect crowds then.

Hi Dianna,

If you aren't planning on going on any rides, then the Universal Express pass might not be worth it. However, if you do plan on experiencing rides, then the pass is definitely worth it, as you're visiting during peak time!

Hi there we're going to be at Universal Studios October 4, 2018 Do you think it will be busy and do you think it's better to buy a general admission or the second universal experience or something like that it's her first time so we're not really sure what's the best option.we like to try and keep the cost down so any recommendations would be greatly appreciate it.we are staying in San Pedro as were leaving for a cruise on the October 5 th how long of a drive is it and what time would you recommend we leave in the morning to get to the park.

Hi Shauna!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts low crowds on October 4, so we recommend sticking with a general admission ticket to save money. It is about a 40 minute drive from San Pedro to Hollywood and we recommend arriving at least 30 minutes ahead of park open.

We are looking at visiting Universal Studios either on our way to or from Disneyland. Just wondering if we should visit Universal Studios August 19/20 or August 24/25 and do you think 2 days are needed? Trying to hit both places with smallest crowds possible that time of the year and decide which park is best for a Saturday or Sunday visit. Thanks.

Hi Kristin!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts that the parks shouldn't be too busy on these dates. It looks like the crowds will be similar throughout your whole trip. We loooove Universal Studios Hollywood and it would be fun for multiple days, but with lower crowds, you should be able to tackle it in one.

I will in LA New Years week 2019 with my teen sons and we want to visit Universal Studios. I’m less concerned about the crowds and more interested if it is worth buying a behind the scenes pass if there is nothing happening on sets during that week. Any ideas?

Reply

Hi Melissa,

Even if there is anything happening on the set, you still won’t see much of it on the tour. The tour will still offer other special experiences that other guests do not get to see and has more great benefits, so we recommend it if it is within your budget no matter when you visit!

I am planning on getting Universal Studios on Monday, July 23rd, 2018. It will be my Wife and I. I know that day is really crowded since it is summer, but it's Monday. If lines will be long... My questions are;

Is a full day enough to see the most interesting shows and rides?

Does it really worth to buy the Express update? Our budget is limited since we're driving through L.A. and it's just a stop we will do in our way to Vegas.

I'd appreciate any comment. Thanks

Is there a specific weekday that is typically less busy? I'm thinking about visiting sometime between 4/9-4/13 and have an open schedule,.

We are going to Universal Studio in Hollywood on Tuesday, April 10th 2018, from 10-6 and purchasing the Universal Express tickets. Should we spend the extra and go one hour early as well. Water World is closed during that time frame. Is 10-6 enough time to see everything once or should be pay 20 more and get the extra hour??

Hi Jan,

According to our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar, April 10 is predicted to have 7/10 crowd levels! Universal Express Pass will definitely help bring your wait time down, but we'd still recommend taking advantage of the early admission if you can manage it.

How anticipated do you recommend to buy VIP tickets? I heard there’s a limit for sale by day...

I want to go on May 22nd. So do I need to buy the week before? 2 days before? Same day?

Im planning a trip with Daughters May 11-12 with a two day pass... Will it be super crowded or will we be able to attend everything over 2 days without wating half the time in lines?

Hi Bekah!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts moderate to busy crowds during these days. Despite this, we still think you'll be able to accomplish everything during your two days there!

Hi!

I know the timing isn’t ideal, but I’m a teacher so stuck with summer months - can you tell me which day of the week will be better to go to Universal Hollywood? We are in LA July 20-23rd.

Is it worth getting VIP tickets for 5/30/2018? Calendars show "it's all right," but how good is "all right."

Hi Michele!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts May 30 will rank as a 6/10 in terms of crowds. If you have the means, we would recommend getting VIP tickets to save time and make the most of your day!

We are choosing to go to Universal Los Angeles tomorrow Tuesday February 20th rather than today as it’s Presidents’ Day holiday and supposed to be busy. How much quieter is it expected to be the day after Presidents’ Day ?

When you say late march is busy, what does that mean in terms of length of lineups for attractions?

Reply
Feb 25, 2018 at 1:26 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Valerie!

You can check our Crowd Calendar for details. It's tough to predict what this means in terms of lines; it depends on the time of day, ride and so much more! We would guess at least an hour wait for each ride. An express pass is perfect for times like these!

Just wondering why June 9 to Aug 11 is the worst time to visit? We were planning on visiting 11th or 12th of June

Hi Lee!

The summer months are particularly crowded as this is when most kids are out of school, so families are hoppin' to take family vacations.

Hello!

I was curious does UVSH do "wheelchair passes" my oldest son can't stand in long lines due to rhemotologic issues. So other parks we just present our doctors note and we're given a piece of paper that allows us to come back to the ride at a certain time.

Also what's the best food (price doesn't matter but quality does) inside the park? Thank you so much!

Hi Brittney!

You should definitely swing by Guest Relations to speak with a Team Member and see what accommodations could be made for you. You can also call ahead to see if you will be eligible. Typically, a doctor's note is not needed ... but it can't hurt!

Our favorite restaurant is The Three Broomsticks in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This is a yummy spot and especially fun for Harry Potter fans!
