~Hoppin'~ Tips for Celebrating a Birthday at Disney World

by Mommy Frog on June 26, 2023
110 Orlando

There's no place more magical to celebrate another year than Walt Disney World, especially for the little tadpoles. It's certainly not something we can afford or arrange every year, but we've celebrated at least one birthday each for Lily and Tad at Disney World, and it's been a major hit.

A birthday bash at the Most Magical Place on Earth can make things extra special, and Disney has lots of additional pixie dust available for parents and friends to consider. If you're planning a Disney World vacation around a birthday, here are some ideas that are icing on the cake!

Tips for Celebrating a Birthday at Disney World

Make Reservations Early

If you want to surprise your prince or princess with a special experience such as dining with their favorite character or building a lightsaber on the big day, make your reservations early. Most reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance. "What should I make those reservations for, Mommy Frog?" I'm glad you asked. We've got a ton of ideas below our tips. Read on! And don't froget that you will need to make a Disney Park Pass reservation for each day of your visit. If you know there's a park the guest of honor will prefer, try to book it ASAP, as spots can and do fill up!

Shout It Out Loud

Celebrating a Birthday at Disney World — Guests holding birthday buttons

If you do nothing else, be sure to get a free Disney birthday button, available at your front desk, Guest Relations or nearly any shop throughout the resort. You can write their name on it for even more personalized greetings. Pin it to your shirt and be prepared for lots of well-wishes from cast members from all areas. It's truly the best day ever when meeting characters on your birthday. We've even had princesses tell Lily "Happy birthday!" from the parade float. This added attention will make your tadpole (and adult frogs too!) feel even more special on their big day. Don't froget to have the remainder of your party grab complimentary "I'm Celebrating!" buttons to join in on the extra attention, as well. It's these extra moments of recognition that really add to the celebration!

Celebrating a Birthday at Disney World — Complimentary birthday cupcake from table-service restaurants

When you make your Disney hotel reservation and Advance Dining Reservations, be sure to tell the cast member that you're celebrating a birthday. (It never hurts to remind them when you check in, either.) Your birthday honoree may receive extra-special treatment in the form of celebrity-level attention, confetti, a cupcake or a personalized note. We once even had balloons and a signed card from Mickey Mouse delivered to our room for Leap, and Dale even helped us to sing "Happy Birthday" during a recent character dining meal! That said, there's no guarantee anything will happen, but you've got nothing to lose and only a dose of Disney magic to gain.

Surprise Them With a Special Disney Hotel Room Celebration

If you are staying on-site at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you can have a surprise waiting for your little one! Disney offers a wide variety of gift baskets and packages you can have sent to your room before you even arrive. When you enter your hotel room for the first time, your tadpole could walk in to see that the celebration has already begun! This would just be an added bonus to an already wonderful trip. And of course, adults can celebrate their birthday too! They also have packages to surprise the king or queen in your life.

Let Them Eat Cake

Celebrating a Birthday at Disney World - Mickey Cake from Amorette’s Patisserie

No birthday is complete without a cake and candles! Order a cake and have it delivered to your table at any of the Walt Disney World table-service restaurants. You can find a full list of participating restaurants on Disney World's website. Cakes must be ordered at least four days in advance, but Advanced Dining Reservations must have already been made. The cake hotline is 407-827-2253.

If a cake is needed sooner than that, don't fret! Disney offers six-inch cakes (both chocolate and vanilla) that feed four to six people. These cakes need no advance notice. Simply order one upon arriving at most of Disney's table-service restaurants. However, due to limited quantity, it's usually best to order the cake at the time of your reservation to ensure availability.

Another option is visiting Amorette’s Patisserie at Disney Springs. You can pick up an adorable Mickey character cake (like the one pictured above), or pre-order a specialty cake at least 72 hours in advance.

You can find lots of specialized toppers in advance of your trip on places such as Etsy or Amazon that are perfect for popping in the guest of honor's favorite treat, sprinkling some birthday pixie dust on that Dole Whip.

Wear Special Birthday Gear

Celebrating a Birthday at Disney World - Mickey Birthday Ears

If you want to call even more attention to the birthday honoree, a birthday Mickey Mouse ear hat is sure to do the trick. Each of the four parks or Disney Springs have large selections of Mickey Mouse ear hats or headbands. Leap's mom sent one to him once. The photos are precious.

Plus, Loungefly has even released a special Mickey Mouse and Friends birthday merchandise collection. The mini backpack even has a removable "It's my birthday" decal so you can sport the confetti any day of the year!

Ideas for a Most Spectacular Birthday at Disney World

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Magic Kingdom – Reveal

  • For the young royal in your family, there are lots of opportunities throughout the parks to meet princesses. For an extra magical experience, consider booking Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, where tadpoles ages 3 to 12 can get the royal treatment and receive magical transformations (there's even a special birthday sash just for the occasion)!
  • If you have a young swashbuckler, tell them to grab their eyepatch and sword — make sure to make a stop near Pirates of the Caribbean, where Captain Jack Sparrow is usually out to say hello! For even more pirate garb, check out the retail just after you step off of the iconic attraction. There's even a fun (and free!) pirate-themed scavenger hunt throughout Adventureland!
  • If being a Jedi is more your tadpoles' speed, be sure to check out Disney's Hollywood Studios! Young Padawans can build either a lightsaber or a droid during their adventure in Black Spire Outpost. Reservations are available 60 days in advance. (Don't miss those photo-ops in front of the TIE Fighter or Millennium Falcon!). For a more budget-friendly experience,  tadpoles can also build their own plastic lightsaber at Tatooine Traders.
  • While at Disney's Animal Kingdom, you can also set out on a series of fun, nature-themed challenges to become an official Wilderness Explorer. It's self-guided, and you'll collect over 25 badges around the park. Pick up a Wilderness Explorer handbook from headquarters —located on the bridge between the Oasis and Discovery Island — or drop by Wilderness Explorer Troop Leader locations in Africa, Rafiki’s Planet Watch, Asia, Dinoland U.S.A. and Pandora – The World of Avatar. This experience is toadally free!
  • When planning dinner for your little princess, I might suggest Be Our Guest at Magic Kingdom. Here you will have the opportunity to have dinner in the Beast's Castle! You have three different rooms you can eat in: The West Wing, The Library and, of course, The Ballroom. Your little princess will feel just like Belle among the storybook castle! Don't froget to try the gray stuff — it's delicious! For another unforgettable royal experience, consider dining inside the castle with Cinderella's Royal Table. Be sure to check out our complete guide to character dining for a look at all the great options at Disney World!
  • Be sure to capture those hoppy birthday memories with some photos! PhotoPass photographers around the resort will be happy to take some group and solo shots to commemorate the occasion. For an extra splurge, consider booking a Capture Your Moment  session — a 20-minute, personalized session with your own photographer — for the perfect way to remember this special day.

We're sure you're hoppin' with ideas for celebrating a birthday at Disney World. Do you have any ideas to add? I'd love to hear how you celebrated a birthday Disney-style. Let me know in the comments below!

From the time my grand daughter turned 2, we would have a Birthday celebration. I would order cake from BoardWalk Bakery(delicious!) I would buy little trinkets wrap them in special boxes with bows, and scatter them around the rooms. Sprinkle some pixie dust, a few “duck feather” and decorate room. In Disney Theme. On way back from pool, my husband would say, “Oh?,lool, there goes Donal Duck and Tinkerbell is with him! She’d run to the room and her eyes would light up with biggest smile.

Did this ever year until 10, went all out! Had s boxes specially wrapped beautiful material and inside was Swarvaski glass slipper, sitting on top of a satin pillow, white gloves and a tiara in Box from Cinderella The next decorated gift box .had a red rose , with some petal dropping glued into a bell shaped jar ? With a note from Belle. There were gifts from Ariel, The Little Mermaid,Jasmine , and Tinkerbell. Tink gave her a necklace filled with fairy dust. I had the Boardwalk Barkery make a Tinkerbell cake. The topper was Tinkerbell , made of white chocolate and hand painted with edible paint She got a birthday card signed by all the Princesses, and fairs dust sprinkled around the room. She’s 18 now, and it’s her most cherished birthday memory.

Hi Alvina!

Yes, you toadally can! You can still pick up a birthday button even if it's not the exact date. Also, if you're dining at a table-service restaurant, there's an option to select that you're celebrating a birthday when you check in via the mobile app.

Hi JB!

You can find more information about cakes at Disney World here. You can pre-order a Mickey Mouse celebration cake at participating restaurants - both in the theme parks and at the hotels — or pre-order a specialty cake from Amorette's Patisserie in Disney Springs. We'd also suggest checking out Disney Floral and Gifts, for special decorations and/or gifts (including floral arrangements, gift baskets and balloons). Perhaps the front desk might be able to help too!

Hi Nick!

We'd recommend a dining reservation at a nice table-service or Disney signature restaurant for an extra special meal, though character dining isn't just for tadpoles either! (Whenever you check in to a dining reservation, you can mention you're celebrating a birthday!) Currently, the EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival is going on until November, but depending on when you go, there could be another fun festival hoppening. Disney Springs would be a nice outing for shopping, live entertainment and dining — you could also take a ride in a hot air ballon or an Amphicar there. If they enjoy golf or mini-golfing, you can hit one of the courses at Disney World. Animal Kingdom is relaxing and a fun spot to see animals (it would be great for an animal lover!). Disney's Fort Wilderness may have unique recreational experiences available, such as archery or kayak rentals. While some experiences aren't currently available, things have been changing and returning quickly, so it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for the return of other special tours or experiences. And of course, you're never too old for a birthday button! We hope this helps :)

Hi Lisa,

Hoppy (early) birthday to your tadpole! Some breakfast character dining experiences have returned. Disney Junior Play n' Dine at Hollywood and Vine inside Hollywood Studios will be returning March 22, 2021. Breakfast à la Art with Mickey & Friends at Topolino's Terrace (Disney's Riviera Resort) and Chef Mickey’s Family Feast at Chef Mickey's (Disney's Contemporary Resort) are also currently available. Be sure to check our character dining guide as it gets closer to your trip in case more options return in the meantime!

Hi Valerie!

We love this so much - what an amazing way to celebrate grandma! Be sure you have a photo package, first and foremost, so that you can commemorate all of those hoppy memories (whether that's included with your annual pass, or you purchase Memory Maker separately). Be sure to snag photos in iconic spots with the whole fam. Likewise, hop by City Hall to get "I'm celebrating" buttons for the whole gang, and a "Happy birthday" button for grandma! We would suggest planning a group dinner, but you'll want to be sure to hop on these as soon as you hit the 180-day reservation mark. Depending on the size of your group, you may want to call the Disney dining line versus trying to book online (they can be reached at (407) 939-3463). The Disney dining line can also help if you'd like to pre-order a cake to be delivered during your group meal. We also have some tips for traveling on a multi-generational trip here that you may find helpful! Let us know if we can help with anything else - hoppy birthday to grandma, and hoppy traveling to you!

Hoppy birthday to your daughter, Sera! We know that cakes can be delivered directly to Cinderella's Royal Table, but we aren't certain where the cake is made. We're so sorry that you haven't gotten what you needed from the cake line directly! Have you tried calling Disney Dining? They may be able to point you towards your options (which you can also find here, if you haven't already.) Disney Dining can be reached at (407) 939-1947. Another option would be to let Cinderella's Royal Table know that it's her birthday for a specially plated dessert, then having your custom-made Grand Floridian cake at a later time at your resort. Sorry that we can't be of more help!

Disney World stopped delivering custom made cakes to the parks earlier this year. We are suprising our daughter for her 17rth birthday with a trip to Disney. Where is the best restaurant to celebrate her birthday. She does not like seafood...mostly Italian, beef and chicken. Also, I just want to order a small birthday cake. Is this something that is relatively easy to handle? We have been to Disney with our kids 4 other times so we have tried many different restaurants. Boma was their least favorite. Would love any suggestions! Thanks.

Hi Carrie!

There are LOTS of Italian options, and as long as you're on Disney property, you can call Disney dining ahead of time to pre-order a small cake to celebrate. In Magic Kingdom, there's Tony's Town Square; Epcot has Via Napoli (which is known for its pizza) and Tutto Italia; Hollywood Studios has Mama Melrose's; Trattoria al Forno on the Boardwalk and Il Mulino nearby at the Swan Dolphin; and there are several options at Disney Springs, including Maria and Enzo's and Terralina. If she loves Italian, we think it'd be extra fun to enjoy a dinner in Italy together :) Hoppy birthday to your tadpole!

Hi Joanna!

To be honest, both are great options! It will depend on what you're looking to do. Epcot has more cultural experiences and less "thrill" rides, while Hollywood Studios is home to thrill rides such as Tower of Terror, Rock 'n' Rollercoaster and the new Slinky Dog Dash. Epcot is known for its immersive eats, drinks and sights. The Hollywood Brown Derby is our table service recommendation at Hollywood Studios, while Epcot has a wide variety of yummy food - from counter service in each pavilion, to a couple of notable table service restaurants. Plus, Epcot's International Flower and Garden Festival will be taking place during your visit, so you'll get some limited-edition experiences if you choose to visit that park! I'm sure other members of the Frog Pond have some great recommendations to add to the mix, as well :) Hoppy birthday to your husband, and have a frogtastic trip!

Hi Becky,

Hoppy birthday to your daughter! It's also Mickey and Minnie's 90th birthday this year, and they are celebrating all year long in confetti outfits! You can meet them together here. We of course recommend the complimentary birthday button from City Hall, and if your daughter enjoys some of the fun Mickey and Minnie merch, it's a perfect opportunity to choose a pair of ears, a shirt -- anything to make the occasion even more special (and there is a TON of special birthday garb for this year's celebration, too!) You can have a custom cake delivered to an on-site restaurant or hotel, or even pick up a character dome cake in Disney Springs (they have Mickey and Minnie!) If you call to make a dining reservation, be sure to let the cast member know you're celebrating your daughter's special day!

Disney also has some resources on their website in case you have any questions about accessibility, as well as a dedicated service line.

We will be there in October for my daughters 16th birthday. Is there anything special that I could do for a teen? Could I have balloons delivered from anywhere to the restaurant that we will celebrate her birthday in?

OMG - that sounds so fun! You can't go wrong with a family trip to Disney World. If your son loves water, we definitely recommend visiting the Disney water parks, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Your whole family will have tons of fun!

We recommend heading to the photo studio at Disney Springs next door to Ghirardelli for awesome family photos! This is included in Memory Maker, which would be a great addition to your trip.

Hi Melissa!

It sounds like our Multi-Generational Trip Tips will be helpful to you! We recommend doing one special meal for the twins (maybe a character breakfast at Chef Mickey's) and one special meal for your father-in-law (something nice and relaxing but not too upscale for the kiddos, like Hollywood Brown Derby.) Let us know if you have any other questions!

Hi Michele,

Yes, it basically does! The "celebration" buttons usually bring extra attention and maybe a few free treats from Cast Members. You can pick up a button at City Hall, hotel front desks, restaurants, Guest Relations and more.

Hi Anna!

We hope you are loving Florida! Donald Duck is one of my absolute favorite characters, too. The three little duckling boys do not meet anywhere at Disney World ... but we recommend doing a character breakfast at Chef Mickey's! This is our favorite place to see Mickey and friends. You can eat a buffet of delicious food and visit with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto. It's perfect for little ones just falling in love with the characters, and the memories last a lifetime! Enjoy!

Taking my Grandmother to Disney World for her 100th Birthday on January 4th. We have the Character Dinner at Grand Floridian booked for her celebration. Even though these ideas are for little ones, I think we may take her to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. She deserves to be a princess on her big day.

Hello! We are heading to Disney World Oct 27 - Nov 3 (yep...right around the corner!). While her actual birthday is not until Nov 20, this trip is in celebration of our daughter's 10th birthday. Since we will be there technically 2 1/2 weeks prior to her birthday, will we miss out on any type of birthday celebration we could potentially have for her while at Disney?

Thank you in advance!

Hi, I'm a single mom and my daughters golden birthday is when she turns 5! She's only 20 months old right now but I really want to take her to Disney World to have a princess party for her 5th birthday and because I'm single and depend on my own income, I thought it would be wise to start saving now, because I do want to go all out! I'm not sure how much it will cost but I want to budget for airfare, hotel stay, party, gifts etc.... Could you give me some advise on what would be the best type of party to select at Disney World for a 5 year old and approximately how much a trip would be?

Thank You,

Maria

Hi Maria,

What a wonderful birthday gift! The cost of your trip depends on many factors — when you're visiting, how long you're staying, where you're staying and such. Check out our Disney World planning tools to get started with that research.

While Disney does not have princess parties, a birthday dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table inside the castle is the next best thing!
