Best Time to Visit Disneyland in 2019 and 2020

by Leap on September 1, 2019 2450 Los Angeles

Best Time to Visit DisneylandIt’s one of the most popular questions we get. I even have friends of friends message me and ask ... "Just when is the best time to visit Disneyland?" My answer is always "whenever you can!" It’s the truth. Whenever you and your family can make the trip to The Happiest Place On Earth is the best time.

But, of course, just like at Walt Disney World, there are better times to visit Disneyland than others. In this post, we're outlining the best times to visit Disneyland in 2019. For those of you looking to get a hop on next year's vacation planning, our 2020 dates and tips will help out as well. The surprise early opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge on May 31, 2019 (and staggered opening of its rides), has made this year a little bit of a challenge in predicting crowds. While crowd levels this summer and fall have been lower than expected, we expect that to change in the coming months, especially as we head into the holidays and winter.

Is It Packed at Disneyland? Here's the Easiest Way to Tell

This post is going to dive into all the nitty gritty details, and the whys and hows of crowds, but let's just cut to the chase. The easiest way to know if it will be crowded at Disneyland is to ask yourself:

  • Is it a major U.S. holiday?
  • Are most kids out of school?

If the answer is yes, to one or both of these questions, there will be bigger crowds.

Want to Know for Sure?

  • Hop straight to our Disneyland Crowd Calendar. You can view the busiest times on the Disneyland Crowd Calendar for the day, month or year.
  • If you're planning a visit, but don't see your particular dates discussed below, leap down to the comments. We frogs — and some of the hardcore Disneyland community — are hoppy to share answers.

Visiting During a Busy Time? Don't Fret!

Even during the busiest times, there are ways to skip the lines and make the most of your time. Here are our best tips to reduce waits!

Factors That Influence the Best Time to Go to Disneyland

Best Time to Visit Disneyland in - Millennium Falcon

If you’re more familiar with Cinderella Castle than Sleeping Beauty Castle, it's important to know that the best time to visit Disneyland in 2019 and 2020 isn't the same as at Disney World. The biggest difference are the locals. Disney World has a good amount of locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. Many of those locals are annual passholders who think of The Happiest Place on Earth as their second home. In other words, they pop in for a few hours here or there — maybe on a weekday, or on a spring or fall Sunday morning before heading to the beach — assuming their pass isn't blocked out.

Depending on the passport, a passholder might find himself or herself blocked out of the park on certain days or weeks, particularly those times that are especially popular with tourists — namely summer, spring break and holidays. The Disneyland blockout calendar provides a fairly good idea of the very busiest dates of the year, because these are the times when most passholders are not allowed to enter the parks. For example, during most of June through mid-August, the Southern California passholders are typically blocked from entering at least one or both parks, a strong sign that there will be tourists! One important thing to keep in mind: Crowds are higher right after major blockout periods such as summer when the locals can get back in.

Another factor that has more influence on crowds at Disneyland than at Disney World are the conventioneers. The Anaheim Convention Center is right across the street. What out-of-town visitor wouldn’t enjoy popping over in the afternoon and early evening for some Disney magic? It’s generally not necessary to rearrange your vacation based on a convention, but there might be one exception. Disney’s own D23 Expo, held every other year, brings flocks of fans. Those folks will plan to spend some of their hours before, during and after the Expo to play in the parks. Note that the next D23 Expo took place in August 2019. We would expect it to return to Anaheim in 2021, although that is not yet confirmed.

Keep in mind that special events and holidays also influence crowds. Many people visit during Disneyland Halloween Time or the holidays to experience the magic of these seasons, and there are special events at different times throughout the year. For example, we expect this October to be busier because of the debut this year of the Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure. This is yet another reason to review our Disneyland crowd calendar — we list the holidays and special events!

Best Time to Visit Disneyland in 2019 and 2020 - Main Street USA

Disneyland's introduction of tiered pricing for one-day tickets several years ago has more of an impact on crowds than at Disney World. Think about it — more people make one-day visits to Disneyland than they do at Disney World. Now each day is categorized as either value, regular or peak pricing. During the off-seasons, Mondays through Thursdays or Tuesdays through Thursdays are generally value priced. If you add a one-day ticket to your cart, you can view Disneyland's pricing calendar — which is yet another indicator of the best and worst days to visit.

Best Time to Visit Disneyland - 1-Day Tiered Tickets

Based on all of this information, and historical crowd levels during holidays and other data, we have a pretty good idea of the very busiest dates of the year at Disneyland. But there are variables. We expect crowds to pick up for the remainder of this year, but with the opening of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance set for Jan. 17, 2020, we expect bigger crowds in 2020.

Expected Busiest Days at Disneyland in 2019

  • Jan. 1-6, 2019
  • MLK Jr. Day - Jan. 19-21, 2019
  • President's Day - Feb. 15-24, 2019
  • Spring break and Easter - March 9-April 15, April 19-22 (elevated crowds March 9-April 22, 2019)*
  • Weekends in May
  • Mid-June through Aug. 22, 2019
  • D23 Expo - Aug. 23-25, 2019
  • The week of Thanksgiving - Nov. 22-Dec. 1, 2019
  • Christmas week through the second week of the New Year - Dec. 21, 2019-Jan. 6, 2020

Expected Busiest Days at Disneyland in 2020

  • Jan. 1-6, 2020
  • MLK Jr. Day - Jan. 18-20, 2020
  • President's Day - Feb. 14-24, 2020
  • Spring break and Easter - March 7-April 20, 2020
  • Weekends in May
  • June 3-Aug. 11, 2020
  • The week of Thanksgiving - Nov. 20-Dec. 1, 2020
  • Christmas week through the second week of the New Year - Dec. 19, 2020-Jan. 10, 2021

*The fall of Easter impacts Disneyland crowds in the spring. Some school districts base their spring break around Easter; others do not. When Easter falls earlier in the season, March or early April, it has the effect of making a more intense, but shorter spring break season. When Easter falls later, as it does in 2019, the effect is a longer but less intense spring break season.

Other Dates That Will Likely See Higher Crowds

Here are other days that see higher crowds, but not as high as the absolute worst days. Some of the dates listed are isolated, with the days around them generally fine, but they do bring in more locals. July 17 is the exception to this, as it is already a busy time. Know of other dates that are popular with locals? Share in comments below.

  • Aug. 19-23 and 25-30, 2019 - passholders are back in after summer blackouts (Expected to be Aug. 17-21 and 23-28, 2020)
  • Southern California Select Annual Passholders back in Disneyland Park - Sept. 3-5, 2019
  • Labor Day - Sept. 2, 2019; Sept. 7, 2020
  • Columbus Day (elevated crowds that week) -  Oct. 14, 2019; Oct. 12, 2020
  • Utah Education Association Convention -  Oct. 17-18, 2019*
  • Veteran's Day (and Veteran's Day Observed) -  Nov. 11, 2019; Nov. 11, 2020
  • Memorial Day - May 27, 2019; May 25, 2020
  • Disneyland's anniversary - July 17, 2019; July 17, 2020

*The Utah Education Association Board will no longer hold its annual convention, although Utah school districts may elect to hold a fall recess.

I want to plan another vacation to visit Disneyland in 2020.

We would like to come after Star Wars is complete. I read it’s supposed to be done in 2020. We were thinking of the last week of March or even mid April. Just not sure when Star Wars is going to be done. Could you help with an idea?? We are planning a 5 day pass park pass and staying in one the resort hotels. Thank you :)

Hi Joni!

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is estimated to be completed in 2019. As long as this timing stays on track, you're good to visit anytime in 2020! Since Easter falls mid-April 2020, we would recommend coming late March instead. Let us know if you have any other questions - it sounds like you have fun plans ahead!

We are planning our first trip to Disneyland with our 3 kids. We are hoping to go in April 2019 for around 3 days. When would be the best time to go? Mid April? April 29-May 1st? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Kristin!

Once May hits, check out our Crowd Calendar to see what to expect in April 2019. Because Easter falls on April 21 next year, mid-April will likely be pretty busy. We'd guess April 29-May 1 to be your best bet.

Hoppy planning!

We are looking to go to Universal and Disney in August, after school gets back in session. Is there really a big difference between the weeks in the 2nd half of August? Also, how bad is Labor Day weekend? Trying to pick the best 7 day window for our trip. Thanks!

Hi Erica,

According to our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar, there isn't a huge difference between the last two weeks. Although, during the week at the end of August, crowds seem to really lighten up. You'll definitely see more crowds during the weekend days of Labor Day Weekend!

Me and my mom are planning a trip to Disneyland (just the two of us), due to our work schedules, we have two days which we can pick from. Thursday April 12 and Saturday April 21st. We want to go the day it will be the most mellow, we don't care if we miss a certain parade or something of that nature, we just want the least hectic date.

April 12 is the last day of the food and wine festival, and its close to spring break.

April 21 is a Saturday and Dapper day... which would you recommend? any advice is greatly appreciated! :)

My mom and I are planning to take a mother daughter Disneyland trip. We have to go before the end of April. With both our working schedules we are in between two dates, Thursday April 12 Or Saturday April 21st. We rather go the most mellow day, we wont be sad if we miss a show or parade,

Which would you suggest would be the least crowded date?

April 12th: closer to spring break, last day of food and wine festival.

April 21st: its a Saturday! and Dapper Day

Thank you for your advice :)

We're going to DL over Memorial for a short trip; 27-30. We did WDW for 9 days starting on New Years Eve a few years ago. What's the crowd level going to be like Memorial Sun-Tue in DL compared to WDW at NYE time? We were at MK and they closed entry for a few hours about mid day.

My husband and I are planning a kid free trip to Disneyland for our 10th anniversary next year! Fortunately we'll have the freedom to choose anytime of the year to go, (planning on two day park hoppers) and were thinking sometime during September. Early September is lasted as a great time, but I'm wondering if there will be any major rides that will be closed at that time to get ready for Halloween? Or would it be smarter to go later in September when maybe all the rides will be open, but then how will crowds be?

Hi Brittany,

It depends when you're going in April, but it looks like historically, late April has lighter crowds than if you were to go in the beginning of the month. The week following President's Day also has light to moderate crowds. Since we don't know the exact opening date for Star Wars Land, we can't really take it much into consideration yet!

Hi, we're visiting during the week of April 2nd. No chance for a different time. It's Nerf or nothing haha. What do you recommend. We want at least 4 or 5 days of Disney World and a day of universal studios. We have considered Disneyland instead but it's busy too. We would be doing the citypass in socal or regular tix in Orlando. Thanks and know your site has helped me cut through a lot of information.

Hi Marie,

We recommend doing at least four days at Disney and two days at Universal! Our Crowd Calendar predicts that week to be a pretty busy time, so you'll want plenty of time to experience everything. You could also do 5 days at Disney and one day at Universal if Disney is more of the priority. It's whatever you're most interested in and looking forward to! Hope you have a wonderful trip!

Hi, do you know the month the new Star Wars area will be open? I know it's 2019 but trying to plan for next year so we see it.

Hi Lynell!

That's a great question. Unfortunately, we have no confirmation (or even speculation) on this. Usually, big openings like this take place late spring/early summer, so that's what we're expecting ... but no way to be sure until Disney confirms!

Hi there!

According to our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar, April 12 and 15 are red days, which means the parks are predicted to be crowded! April 16 is a Monday and is a yellow day, so it should be less busy. Hope you have a great trip!

We are traveling from Australia in June, with small children (ages 2, 4 and 6). Our days in Disneyland are 28-1 July (staying 3 nights). I feel this might be bang on busiest time? I check the calendar but it is showing Memorial Day on 28 June which I think is incorrect? Assistance on best pass option too would be helpful given the prices have just jumped a lot!

Hi Carly!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts that crowds will be heavy during this time, but weather will be beautiful! We recommend getting the park hopper tickets for your family as well as MaxPass to get the most out of your visit.

Hoppy planning!

Hi! We have a Family reunion in SoCal and we're looking at dates July 2 & 3rd 2018. That's a Monday and Tuesday, the day before the 4th of July. Is that just crazy to go during that time?? Will the lines just be too long?? Thanks!

Hi Frannie!

Our Crowd Calendar shows that crowds will be at their peak. July is a super busy month, and any holidays (especially the 4th of July) bring in tons of families. If you choose to tackle Disneyland, we recommend getting the MaxPass to make the most of your time.

I have currently booked a 3 day park hopper for our first time with the three kiddos. We are going April 18th,19th and the 20th. Will this be a good time to go? On a scale of 1-10, one being the worst time and 10 being the best time to go, where does these dates fall?

Hi Steve!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts this will be a 5/10 in terms of crowd levels. The weather will be gorgeous, so we think this is a great time to visit!

May is usually moderate in crowds and has beautiful weather. This is an awesome time to visit! Our top tip is to take advantage of Disneyland's MaxPass to make the post of your time. Enjoy your trip, and let us know if you have any other planning questions!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts moderate crowds and beautiful weather that week, so it should be an excellent time to visit. Park hours have not yet been announced, but we would predict for Disneyland to be open until midnight, and California Adventure to be open until around 10 p.m.

Hi!

I'm planning a visit to Disney to go to the parks from April 1st to April 5th this year. In an escale from 1 to 10 in which 1 is a very low crowd, and 10 is the very highest crowd, what number would you give to those days?

Thanks.-

Hi Jerry!

According to our Crowd Calendar, the parks will be at a 7-10, crowd-wise. This is due to Easter falling on that Sunday ... holiday weeks are always hectic!

Don't worry about the timing ... you're sure to have a great time no matter what! Our top tip would be to take advantage of MaxPass to make the most of your time. This gives you unlimited FastPasses through the app without having to hop around the park for the paper versions - a huge time saver!

8-14

Why is it a crowded time at Disneyland?

Hi Noel,

This could be partly due to the Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival taking place!

Planning to go to Disneyland during this summer break with my daughter, it's her first time. When would you recommend to go for less crowds and with most of the rides still open?

Reply
Feb 6, 2018 at 11:53 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Wendy,

Generally, the whole summer break is pretty busy with school being out. Early June and late May are better than July, and if you can swing it, mid to late August is also less crowded since kids are getting back in school. Check out our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar to see crowd predictions!

We are planning a trip during May 21-23,2018. I heard that Grad Nites takes place during those times and make it the absolute worst time to visit. Is this true? Thanks so much for your help! Planning a vacation to Disneyland and booking soon.

Hi Loralie,

It looks like Grad Nite 2018 only takes place one night during your vacation (May 22). Other than that day, your vacation is during a relatively good time of year!

We are looking at a family vacation to Disneyland in late May 2018 - I see you don't suggest the park on weekends, is it just a busier time? The official Disneyland website only has a calendar up to March 2018 - is the fireworks display on during weekday evenings? How many days would you recommend for a family of four with two girls age 6 and 7?

Thanks!

Reply
Feb 2, 2018 at 4:57 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Lara!

Sounds like it will be a blast. Weekends in May are quite crowded, so we usually encourage weekdays. Fireworks aren't currently taking place at Disneyland, but shows should be back up and running by your May trip! Fantasmic takes place every night as well.

If your whole trip is dedicated to Disneyland, we would recommend about 4 days there. This allows you to have an enjoyable pace, and your girls will have a blast!

Hello! Planning my son’s first visit (he’ll be 4) and daughters second visit (6) we want to be in the park September 4,5, & 6 2018with a Park hopper. What are the chances that popular rides such as Haunted Mansion will be shut down for Halloween decorating? Also given that is immediately after Labor Day, how busy will it be?

Reply
Feb 2, 2018 at 4:53 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Blaire!

Unfortunately, there is a good chance that the Haunted Mansion will be closed for the holiday overlay during those dates. It usually shuts down for three weeks beginning in late August. Our Crowd Calendar predicts moderate business on those days for the exact reason you stated - holiday weeks tend to draw in many families.
