He gets to visit a theme park and a working Hollywood studio!  It's a thrill for him to be on location where "Back to the Future" and "Psycho" were filmed. Because of his interest in Tinseltown, we're always looking for the best times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood.

Transformers: The Ride 3-D,  The Walking Dead Attraction and Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem provides unforgettable thrills and fun. Live shows such as Waterworld and the Special Effects Show are can't-miss crowd pleasers. The arrival of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter brought a new level of thrills, with Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. How Locals Influence the Best Times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2017 & 2018

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood - Waterworld

If you’re used to visiting Universal Orlando rather than the Hollywood original, know that there are some differences. The best times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2017 and 2018 isn't necessarily the same ones at Universal Orlando. The biggest difference is the locals. Universal Orlando has locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles regional area. More and more of these locals are annual passholders who might spend the end of their week at The Three Broomsticks while sipping on Butterbeer.

Dropping in for a pint at Moe's sounds cool, but it's not always possible for local passholders. Depending on the passport, a passholder might find himself or herself blocked out of the park on certain days or weeks. Those block out times—namely summer, spring break and holidays—are popular travel times for tourists.  Looking at Universal's Universal Black-Out Calendar — this one is for California locals — gives you a fairly good idea of the very busiest dates of the year. This is because these are the times when most of the passholders are not allowed to enter. For all of July through early August, the California Neighbor Pass holders are blocked from entering the park entirely. That's a sure sign that there will be tourists!

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood - Hogsmeade

Harry Potter has unsurprisingly created a spike in interest and attendance at Universal Studios Hollywood. It has also fueled interest in of one of our most popular posts on when to use the Front of Line pass. His West Coast arrival draws Potter fans who can't make the trip to Orlando. Vacationers are extending their trips to visit the Wizarding World. Locals are renewing their passes. We're expecting this surge (or... lighting bolt?) of interest in Universal Studios Hollywood to continue over the next few years. We've been hearing whispers of Wizarding additions too. Aparecium!

Hi! My family of four plan to tour Universal Studios Hollywood on Feb.27, 2017 during our Anaheim-Disneyland stay. We'll probably depart early morning from Anaheim and spend more or less 8 hours in the Studio and head back. Kindly give us a ticket cost estimate. Thanks

Please disregard the previous email, date was Feb. 2 instead of Feb. 27, 2017. Thanks again

Hi Crispin,

All of our ticket options are available here. You would purchase the NON-PEAK General Admission ticket, or upgrade to Front of the Line if you want to "hop" the lines.

Hi-

Our only two options are Sunday 4/9 or Monday 4/10. Sunday look slightly better on the crowd calendar even though it's a weekend day. I'm assuming we'd need peek tickets, but I couldn't find an explanation of peek vs non-peek. Harry Potter is our #1 priority and then the Studio Tour. I'm considering splurging on the VIP tickets. Given the crowd size and only having 1 day, do you think it would be worth the money? Thanks so much!

FrogBlog Feb 12, 2017 at 7:20 a.m.

Hi Stephanie,

Your visits would both fall on NON-Peak ( peek :) ) days. If you can afford the extra expense, we recommend the Front of the Line passes, but know they are not valid for any Wizarding World of Harry Potter experiences. We're expecting Spring Break crowds during that time, so be prepared!

Hello and thanks so much for your wonderfully informative resources! My family (2 adults, 2 boys 7, 10) will be visiting Disneyland in early Sept and my 10 year old is dying to visit Universal Hollywood for Harry Potter and the Minions. We'll spend 2-3 days at DL and 1 day at Universal. Given traffic/travel times would you recommend changing hotels for the visit to Universal? Thank you!

Hi Jennifer,

Yes, it's always a good idea to stay off the Southern California freeways! There are convenient hotels around the Universal Studios area. It's well worth the stay in the area then try the 2+ morning rush hour from Anaheim to LA.

Thanks for this post! We visited last September towards the end of the month on a Tuesday and it was fantastic. SUPER low crowds. We are now planning another trip this coming September and will be there on September 11. In looking for hotels, it looms like the Hilton is completely booked already from September 8-11. Do you think this is cause for concern? I can't find any events specifically that would already have an entire hotel booked and I'd hate to accidentally plan a trip for a terribly busy day!

Reply
FrogBlog Mar 9, 2017 at 8:29 a.m.

Hi Candace,

It's possible there is a convention/meeting or other event taking place at the Hilton, or we don't have an allotment of rooms available. Crowd-wise we're forecasting low to average crowds. There are plenty of other great hotels in the Universal area!

My oldest turns 11 on Oct 14 and we want to surprise her with a Hogwarts letter. :) I see that her actual birthday falls on a Saturday, so we'll avoid that. We plan to go two days, but see on your crowd calendar that the 12th has high crowds. We'd like to go on a Wed and Thurs - why is that Thurs so high? Should we be ok if we go the 11th and 13th, or would it be better to wait until the following week on the 18th and 19th instead? And do you know when they'll post the dates for Halloween Horror Hollywood, because we absolutely want to avoid that.

Hi,

Last year, Halloween Horror Nights ran Thurs-Sun. That would make Mon-Wed your best bet to avoid HHN. We're expecting to know the dates before the end of April, so you might want to wait until then to get the trip booked.

The price difference between buying them from the Universal website and your site is quite substantial, and I want to make sure I don't end up with the wrong tickets (since they're non-refundable). With a 5- and 7-year-old, the VIP Experience might not be worth it. Since it includes a 7-hour tour with a guide, you don't have as much freedom to navigate through the park at your leisure. And if your kids are anything like Tad and Lily, they can be a bit unpredictable! We would recommend sticking with the Front of the Line passes if your concern is just beating the lines.

Hi, we are planning to visit during the week of Sept. 25-29. What day of the week would you recommend considering we are trying to avoid Halloween Nights? And would you recommend a FOL Pass for that day? Thanks

Hi Dayton,

According to our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar, the 26th-28th are all green days, so crowds and waits shouldn't be bad. Universal Studios Hollywood hasn't yet released the exact dates of Halloween Horror Nights; we just know it's select nights starting Sept. 15. As soon as we know the dates, we'll update the Halloween Horror Nights post.

Hi there, my family and I are heading to LA in Sept/October, looking like universal studios on sunday 1st october. My question is with park hours closing at 6pm, will there be no light shows for hogwarts? With the halloween stuff kicking in I'm guessing the light show takes a break?

Hello,

Which day would be better Sunday or Monday July 30th or 31st for a family of 4?

FrogBlog Jul 25, 2017 at 11:12 a.m.

Hi there,

According to our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar, those are both heavily crowded days. However, Mondays tend to be less crowded than Sundays.

Hello, we're already planning next year's vacations & we're looking at spending 2 days at Universal & at least 1 or 2 days at a beach. In your opinion, would the 1st week of June or mid September be our better choice? Thank you!

Reply
FrogBlog Jul 25, 2017 at 11:03 a.m.

Hi Amy,

In terms of crowds, September is definitely the better choice. Kids are back at school, and besides Labor Day, there are no major holidays. The weather is also still warm enough to enjoy the beach.

Thanks!

Does Universal tend to use the slower months to close several rides for maintenance? Or will some tend to close to start decorating for holidays (in Sept)?

FrogBlog Aug 14, 2017 at 7:56 a.m.

Hi Amy,

Typically, the slower months are when Universal will refurbish attractions. The schedule of which ones is always subject to change.

My kids and I will be in Southern California July 26th to August 1st, what would be the best day to go to Universal Studios during that time.?

FrogBlog Jul 25, 2017 at 1:31 p.m.

Hi Heather,

According to our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar, all of those days are going to be red and at level 8. You can expect crowd levels to be pretty high, so choose what day works best for your schedule. Weekends tend to be even busier than weekdays.

Hello! My husband and I will be visiting both Disneyland and Universal Hollywood this upcoming October (the 16th through the 20th). We will probably be at Universal on that Wednesday, and are trying to decide if we should get a front of the line pass. We are especially eager for the WWoHP, of course! Would it make sense to buy front of the line passes for that day? Or should we be okay without them? Do you perhaps have an estimate as to wait line times during the off-season?

Hello,

I'm planning to be in Universal Studios in August 31st. Do you thing I should buy the fast line ticket or that it wouldn't be crowded?

Thank you in advance.

FrogBlog Aug 1, 2017 at 2:25 p.m.

Hi Tevel,

Our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar shows that day's crowd levels as 5/10. Crowds won't be super crazy, but the FOL pass will keep you from waiting at all.

Hi there,

Yes, we recommend a FOL pass for that day. The park will still be crowded since it's still summer vacation time.

Love your website! We are visiting Southern Cali for the first time in six years the last week of Jan/first week of Feb 2018 (week of Jan 28). We want to do one day of Universal and three days of Disney. Any recommendations on which days are best to visit each? We are tentatively thinking Monday Universal, Tuesday Disney, Wednesday break day, Thursday and Friday Disney. Thanks!

We are planning to go to Universal on either Sunday 29th October or Monday 30th which do you reccommend? We are thinking of the VIP tour or front of line tickets... is the VIP tour worth it. We are from Australia love movies and this is a once only trup to LA.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ruthi,

Looking at our Crowd Calendar, we're forecasting average crowds on both of those days in October. You should be fine without Front of Line tickets.

We have not experienced the VIP tour, but it may be a great way to see the studio if you are huge movie fans. Maybe one of our readers has taken the tour and can comment!

Nice website, very informative...

Question about Thanksgiving week...I've seen some conflicting info about crowd size on various sites. Some say it is packed the entire week. Others say Mon & Tues are not crowded, but Thursday and Friday are very busy. Can you confirm about early-week crowds? Thanks

Hi Steven,

Thanksgiving week is a busy time at any theme park. We were at Universal Studios Orlando last Thanksgiving week and it was very crowded Monday and Tuesday. We hopped away before the Thursday and Friday crowds. Perhaps there was someone that visited USH last Thanksgiving week and can chime in?

Hi,

We plan to visit Universal Studios Hollywood on Thu-5-Oct or Fri-6-Oct. Average is expected for both (6/10). Seeing that park opens 1 hour later on Friday we think we are going on Fri-6-Oct. Does it seem a good call ?

My husband and I are planning to be in Anaheim and LA Oct. 7-12. We want to go to Universal Studios on Sunday the 8th. We aren't going to the haunted attractions so will the normal park be busy that day? The other days we are planning on hitting up Disneyland. How does this sound to you?

FrogBlog Sep 15, 2017 at 9:06 a.m.

Hi Aubrey,

Looking at our Crowd Calendar, we're forecasting heavy crowds at Southern California theme parks during Oct. 7-9. As for the 8th at Universal, you may see crowds since some people spend the day at Universal and stick around for Horror Nights.

Keep hopping!
