Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

by Leap on July 5, 2019 508 Los Angeles

You long-time frog fans know Tad as our official frog family videographer. While he toadally enjoys making ride videos for our YouTube channel, he really has set his sights on becoming the next Spielberg. For him, it doesn't get any better than Universal Studios Hollywood. It's a thrill for him to be "on location" inside the theme park that just so hoppens to be where "Back to the Future" and "Psycho" were filmed. And we know he's not the only one who's excited to visit! With the addition of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more family-friendly attractions, this theme park/working studio sure is more hopping than ever.

Whether you have a filmmaker in your family or you're just a bunch of fun seekers, it helps to know the least crowded time to visit. Lucky for you, we've got the best dates to visit Universal Studios Hollywood for 2019 and 2020 if you're planning a trip!

When to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Main Entrance

Our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar is the best tool to help you get a day-by-day look at expected crowds a full year in advance. If your particular dates are not listed, jump down to the comments below and ask. We frogs will be hoppy to answer. We've got a similar post devoted to the best and worst times to visit Disneyland if you hoppen to be planning visits to both. (Now, if only we could predict travel times on those SoCal highways ... that would be something!)

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Harry Potter has unsurprisingly created a spike in interest and attendance at Universal Studios Hollywood. It has also fueled interest in of one of our most popular posts — when to use the Universal Express Ticket (formerly known as the Front of Line Pass) . His West Coast arrival draws Potter fans who can't make the trip to Orlando. The locals love him too. We're expecting this surge (or... lighting bolt?) of interest in Universal Studios Hollywood to continue over the next few years. And there are always whispers of Wizarding additions. Aparecium!

Jurassic World

It's probably a good time to talk about Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. While it opened in an entirely different park, May 31 at Disneyland, it has and will continue to influence crowds at Universal Studios Hollywood for the rest of this year. While crowds aren't impacted as much by Star Wars at Universal Studios Hollywood as at Disneyland, they are impacted. This is because many of the people who are making the trek to LA to experience Star Wars land at Disneyland Resort will also decide to hop over to Universal Studios Hollywood. Crowd levels so far have not followed predictions are it relates to Star Wars, and crowd levels for the first part of the summer have been lighter than normal. This is true for Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood. We expect this will change as we head into late summer and fall, especially with the recent opening of Jurassic World!

How Locals Influence the Best Times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2019 and 2020

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Waterworld

If you’re used to visiting Universal Orlando Resort rather than the Hollywood original, know that there are some differences. The best times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2019 and 2020 aren't necessarily the same ones at Universal Orlando. The biggest difference are the locals. Universal Orlando has locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles regional area. More and more of these locals are annual passholders, who think nothing of popping in for a pint of Butterbeer after the end of a long week.

While the regional passholders have a large influence on crowds, it's not all doom and gloom. Many passholders have blockout times during the times most popular with tourists — mostly summer, spring break and the holidays, but also a few weekends here and there. Looking at Universal's Silver Annual Pass available days calendar gives you a fairly good idea of the very busiest dates of the year. This is because these are the times when most of the passholders are not allowed to enter. While originally these passholders were blocked out from June through mid-August, this has been modified (likely because of lower-than-expected summer crowds). They are blocked for most of July and some of August. The rest of the year, they see more blockouts on Saturdays and/or Sundays until December, when they are blocked out from Dec. 14 on.

We will be visiting Universal Studios Hollywood on 1 January 2020, is it very busy and how long are the ride lines? This is unfortunately the only day we have before flying back to South Africa, so any advice is appreciated.

Hi Tania!

Holidays are usually busy at theme parks, and crowds can vary from year to year. Our advice is to arrive early. Since many people sty up late on Dec 31, the morning should be significantly less crowded.

Hi Jason,

They are both great days to visit Universal Studios. One thing to watch for is the Halloween Horror Nights schedule, which may extend into that weekend and affect park hours and crowd levels. In 2018, some of those dates were added once Hollywood Horror Nights was underway. We will be updating our Halloween Horror Nights Survival Guide throughout the summer and Halloween season.

My wife an I will go but are not interested in the rides so were going to get normal tickets and then the Express for our 2 kids. But we want to do the studio tours so would the kids jump to the front and we'd have to wait? Thanks Haydn

The Universal Studios Hollywood Express Pass is a full ticket that includes admission to Universal Studios Hollywood, plus one-time access to each ride, show and attraction - which sounds like it'd be exactly what you're looking for! Hi, I noticed that the annual pass is not blocked for June 2 - 3 2019 but it is listed as a peak day on the calendar. Information I read indicated that crowds are usually worse during the black-out dates. It also indicates that mid June - early August are among the worst days so we are outside that window. Just trying to decide if it is worth it because we are on a budget and that extra 70.00 per person for a family of 5 is questionable. We are planning just a one day visit to the park. Looking for some advise....

Hi Estella!

You can find online prices for the tickets with the Express option here via Universal. The price can vary at the park, and if the crowds are higher than expected, the price goes up. Expect prices to be higher and availability to be lower at the park. We have seen it be $70 to add on in the park, but that may be different when you visit. It can go up as the day goes on, so it’s hard to say for certain.

Hi Hayley,

There shouldn't be a huge difference between those dates. I would pick the one that is best for you!

Hi Kristine!

According to our Crowd Calendar, those days will be about an 8/10. We'd spring for Express Passes if it's in your budget :) You can upgrade at the park.

I am planning to go in June. Open to any day as long as it's in June. Can you tell me the best day to visit? Is mid-week better like a Wednesday?

Hi Elizabeth,

We would recommend the first week in June, Monday through Thursday.

We are planning for a visit on 3/11 & 3/12. Should we consider the Express pass?

Hi,

It's possible you may not need them, and you have the option to add them in the park if you decide you do.

we are visiting Universal march 14th, 15th and 16th 2019. Is it going to be crazy crowded? Should we get the express passes?

Hi Annmarie,

That is the start of spring break and will start seeing elevated crowds, although it is not expected to be the busiest time. The good news is that you can purchase the value Express Ticket for March: https://www.undercovertourist.com/los-angeles/universal-studios-hollywood/

Hi Ma,

This would be a fairly good time to visit during the day, but keep in mind that Halloween Horror Nights brings in a lot of guests and many of them will spend the days in the parks. A weekday when Halloween Horror Nights isn't happening would be less crowded.

We will be staying at Universal Hollywood from April 20 - 24. We would like spend 2 of the 4 days at Universal Studios. We think it would make sense to spend our arrival date there. Of the other 3 days, which would be the best day to by an express pass. will it be as busy on the 22 and 23rd as on the weekend?

Hi Donna,

If you've got two days, you may not need Express Passes. We expect the least-crowded days to be the 22-24.

Hi, I'm planning to visit universal studios on the 18.4.19 , would you recommend buying the express ticket from advance?

Hi Ariel!

Our Crowd Calendar is showing 8/10 crowd levels, so purchasing the Express pass in advance is probably a good idea to get a hop in the lines :)

Hi - we are visiting California for spring break and want to do Universal Studios VIP on either Easter Sunday or Monday April 22nd. With VIP does it really matter which day we choose?

Hi MJ!

You are correct -- with VIP, you get Express access to rides and the best seats at shows, so it really doesn’t matter which day you visit.

We are going to universal the week of March 4-7. Which days would you suggest for the two day pass? Would you upgrade to express pass?

Reply
Jan 31, 2019 at 9:09 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Scott!

According to our Crowd Calendar, March 5 and 6 would be the best bests for your two day pass. Crowds are rated moderately at a 5 and 6, so wait times should be moderate as well. Depending on your comfort with lines and waiting, we suggest checking things out once you get there and upgrading if need be (though there's definitely something to be said for hopping to the front of every line)!

Keep hopping!
