Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

by Leap on September 1, 2019 587 Los Angeles

You long-time frog fans know Tad as our official frog family videographer. While he toadally enjoys making ride videos for our YouTube channel, he really has set his sights on becoming the next Spielberg. For him, it doesn't get any better than Universal Studios Hollywood. It's a thrill for him to be "on location" inside the theme park that just so hoppens to be where "Back to the Future" and "Psycho" were filmed. And we know he's not the only one who's excited to visit! With the addition of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more family-friendly attractions, this theme park/working studio sure is more hopping than ever.

Whether you have a filmmaker in your family or you're just a bunch of fun seekers, it helps to know the least crowded time to visit. Lucky for you, we've got the best dates to visit Universal Studios Hollywood for 2019 and 2020 if you're planning a trip!

When to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Main Entrance

Our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar is the best tool to help you get a day-by-day look at expected crowds a full year in advance. If your particular dates are not listed, jump down to the comments below and ask. We frogs will be hoppy to answer. We've got a similar post devoted to the best and worst times to visit Disneyland if you hoppen to be planning visits to both. (Now, if only we could predict travel times on those SoCal highways!)

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Harry Potter has unsurprisingly brought in more muggles to experience the Wizarding World and Universal Studios Hollywood. It has also fueled interest in one of our most popular posts — when to use the Universal Express Ticket (formerly known as the Front of Line Pass) . We're expecting this surge (or... lighting bolt?) of interest in Universal Studios Hollywood to continue over the next few years. And there are always whispers of Wizarding additions. Aparecium!

Jurassic World

It's probably a good time to talk about Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. While it opened in an entirely different park, May 31 at Disneyland, it has and will continue to influence crowds at Universal Studios Hollywood for the rest of this year. While crowds aren't impacted as much by Star Wars at Universal Studios Hollywood as at Disneyland, they do have some impact. This is because many of the people who are making the trek to LA to experience Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland Resort will also decide to hop over to Universal Studios Hollywood. Crowd levels were lower than expected in summer for Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood, perhaps because so many feared crazy large crowds for Galaxy's Edge or because of a staggered ride opening (Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance isn't opening until January 2020). We expect this will change in fall and winter, especially with the recent opening of Jurassic World!

How Locals Influence the Best Times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2019 and 2020

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Waterworld

If you’re used to visiting Universal Orlando Resort rather than the Hollywood original, know that there are some differences. The best times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2019 and 2020 aren't necessarily the same ones at Universal Orlando. The biggest difference are the locals. Universal Orlando has locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles regional area. More and more of these locals are annual passholders, who think nothing of popping in for a pint of Butterbeer after the end of a long week.

While the regional passholders have a large influence on crowds, it's not all doom and gloom. Many passholders have blockout times during the times most popular with tourists — mostly summer, spring break and the holidays, but also a few weekends here and there. Looking at Universal's Silver Annual Pass available days calendar gives you a fairly good idea of the very busiest dates of the year. This is because these are the times when most of the passholders are not allowed to enter. While originally these passholders were blocked out from June through mid-August, this has been modified (likely because of lower-than-expected summer crowds). They are blocked for most of July and some of August. The rest of the year, they see more blockouts on Saturdays and/or Sundays until December, when they are blocked out Saturdays in December and from Dec. 21 through Jan. 2, 2020.

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Studio Tour

Hi! We are planning to visit Universal Studios Hollywood on Feb 9th 2020 we have 2 kids ages 7 and 8. Do you think we need to purchase the express pass? If we don't, how long are the waits for rides? Mahalo

Hi Dori!

Wait times can vary based on the rides, but you can expect 20-40 minute waits for most rides. It should not be a busy time, but follow our touring plan to get the lowest wait times per ride! Be sure to knock out the Lower Lot in the morning for the shortest wait times there. Have fun!

With the shorter hours in February....will we be able to enjoy all the thrill rides in the park in one day? Either Tuesday 2/12 or Friday 2/14?

Reply
Jan 14, 2020 at 3:12 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Kelly!

Great question! We think so. If the rides are your priority ad you arrive at park opening, you should be able to get them in. If you qualify for Single Rider, that can help shave some time off longer lines. You probably will not be able to catch all the shows. Keep your eye on the last tram time of the day for the Studio Tour. Have fun!

Will February 10-13 be busy at Universal Orlando? My son is 10 and my daughter is 14, which park would be better for our family as we are only staying one day Thanks

Hi Sandy!

That time looks to be low in terms of crowds (5/10) according to our Crowd Calendar! Both parks are super fun, so our first suggestion would be to pick a One Day Park-to-Park ticket so that you can take the Hogwarts Express between the two. If you aren't able to swing a park-to-park, we'd suggest Universal's Islands of Adventure. Have fun!

Hi Emily!

You can check out our Crowd Calendar for projected crowd levels on specific days here. This whole week is a busy one, so we'd spring for either Express Passes at Universal or MaxPass at Disney if you can! Universal Studios Hollywood is a great fit for your Jurassic Park and Harry Potter lovers, while Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park are good picks for Frozen and Mickey lovers. Have a great time!

Hi. Is the VIP experience worth it for May 11th 2020? It looks like crowds will be okay so not sure if paying for the extras like breakfast/lunch will e worth the added expense.

Reply
Dec 30, 2019 at 12:48 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Samantha!

The VIP experience can be worth it if you want access to experiences that are not shown to other park guests. But if rides and main show are your priority, you can save with an Express Pass. While this can be a slower time without long lines, if the park hours are short then it can be challenging to see it all on your own without Express.

Hi Rich!

That day is expected to be a 7/10 in terms of crowds, according to our Crowd Calendar, so we'd spring for Express if you can! An alternative, if you think they're mostly in it for the Harry Potter experience, is to wait and see how you feel once you arrive and upgrade in the park if passes are still available.

Hi Beth,

Since you'll be arriving on Memorial Day, we'd expect higher crowds that day, but the rest of the week should have medium crowds (crowd level 6 on our Crowd Calendar), as local schools are still usually wrapping up the school year that week. We'd toadally recommend Universal's Volcano Bay! With its TapuTapu virtual line system, you don't have to worry about waiting in long lines for the slides.

Be sure to meet meet Juliet, the Triceratops, Tango, the baby raptor and maybe even some Transformers. The Dino Play area in the Lower Lot will be fun, as well as Super Silly Fun Land in the Upper Lot. Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem will be fun if he is tall enough. Bring a swim suit for the water play area! Kung Fu Panda and the Studio Tour are great. In the Wizarding World, make sure to do the castle walk through even if he is not tall enough for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Attend a wand pairing, purchase an interactive wand and cast spells. Don’t miss the animal actors show! Have a wonderful time :)

However, details past Sept. 2 are no longer available - we'll keep our eyes and ears open for more details!

Hi Elizabeth!

Either day should be a great time to visit. While the VIP may not be necessary, it does have some cool perks and areas you cannot otherwise access. There is usually no live filming on Saturday. When there is live filming, besides Mario Live, you don’t usually see it, but are more likely to avoid those areas on the Studio Tour. Weekends may give you more access to the full backlot.

It may vary per day, with weekends being open later than weekdays, but expect shorter hours. It could be open 10-6 during a non-holiday period.

How do we know what is peak, non peak, etc. for purchasing tickets???

Hi Melinda!

This pricing generally corresponds with holidays and crowds. If you're purchasing through Universal, you'll see a calendar with pricing listed on each day. If you're purchasing through Undercover Tourist, click on the ticket you'd like to see and the small box will expand with date restrictions for each category. Let us know if you have any further questions - hoppy to help!

We're trying to decide between 8/25 and 8/26 to visit Universal Hollywood. The kids (8 and 10) are not so much into rides but do want to see Harry Potter World and do the studio tour. Would any of those days work, or would a weekday be preferable to a weekend? Thanks!

Aug 6, 2019 at 1:46 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Saum!

Both of those days are forecast to be a 7/10 in terms of crowds, according to our Crowd Calendar, though generally weekdays are slightly less crowded than weekends (especially since kiddos are largely back in school by then!) Either day should be just fine for your fam.

Hello! Were visiting universal studios hollywood this october! It will be our first time but were doing the VIP tour. Can you give us any tips for making the most of the trip? Also planning on going to the museum of natural history, walk of fame, etc. hoping to make the most of our time there. Really love the articles. Thanks!

Hi Misty!

We're so glad you hopped by - thanks for reading! At Universal, arrive early and try to visit on a day that does not have Hollywood Horror Nights so you’ll have the longest day possible. You might add a beach day (near the Santa Monica Pier) to your journey as October can still be quite warm.

Hi everyone

I am planning a California Park trip in late January to early February 2020. I will visit the parks mainly Monday through Friday to avoid the queues as much as possible.

Also, I will buy express tickets where possible.

I'm just not sure how much time I have to count for the parks.

I thought: Disneyland 3 days, Universal Studios 2 days, Six Flags MM 2 days, Knott's 1 day. Is that ok or too much? As a comparison in Orlando I did the same in 2018 and I had 4 1/2 days for WDW and 2 1/2 days for Universal Studios Orlando (with unlimited express pass) and it was almost too much. I'm less interested in the shows, mainly at the rides.

Hi Daniel!

Three days at Disneyland sounds great. You can probably get by with one day at each of the other parks, especially if you get Universal Express at Universal Studios and mostly care about rides.

Thank you for this detailed best dates information!!!

I just wonder: How about the weekdays in the last 2 weeks of August? Do you think the weekends are better than a Tuesday?? In Universal Hollywood!

Thank you so much in advance...

That whole week tends to be pretty busy, from what we've experienced - I'm sure some of the others in the Frog Pond will weigh in, too!

We will be visiting Universal Studios Hollywood on 1 January 2020, is it very busy and how long are the ride lines? This is unfortunately the only day we have before flying back to South Africa, so any advice is appreciated.

Hi Tania!

Holidays are usually busy at theme parks, and crowds can vary from year to year. Our advice is to arrive early. Since many people sty up late on Dec 31, the morning should be significantly less crowded.

Hi,

We (3 adults and 2 kids - 10 and 5) are planning to visit Universal Hollywood on 8/29. The crowd calendar shows 5/10. What does the mean though? Will there be not many people at all and so express pass won't be worth it? Or better to still get it considering we are going with kids. Thanks

Hi,

You likely will not need Express for these dates as medium crowds are expected.

Guess Friday, November 1 is better than Sunday, November 3 this year?

Reply
Jun 19, 2019 at 6:42 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Jason,

They are both great days to visit Universal Studios. One thing to watch for is the Halloween Horror Nights schedule, which may extend into that weekend and affect park hours and crowd levels. In 2018, some of those dates were added once Hollywood Horror Nights was underway. We will be updating our Halloween Horror Nights Survival Guide throughout the summer and Halloween season.
