Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

by Leap on February 6, 2019 450 Los Angeles

You long-time frog fans know Tad as our official frog family videographer. While he toadally enjoys making ride videos for our YouTube channel, he really has set his sights on becoming the next Spielberg. For him, it doesn't get any better than Universal Studios Hollywood. It's a thrill for him to be "on location" inside the theme park that just so hoppens to be where "Back to the Future" and "Psycho" were filmed. And we know he's not the only one who's excited to visit! With the addition of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more family-friendly attractions, this theme park/working studio sure is more hopping than ever.

Whether you have a filmmaker in your family or you're just a bunch of fun seekers, it helps to know the least crowded time to visit. Lucky for you, we've got the best dates to visit Universal Studios Hollywood for 2019 and 2020 if you're planning a trip!

When to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Main Entrance

Our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar is the best tool to help you get a day-by-day look at expected crowds a full year in advance. If your particular dates are not listed, jump down to the comments below and ask. We frogs will be hoppy to answer. We've got a similar post devoted to the best and worst times to visit Disneyland if you hoppen to be planning visits to both. (Now, if only we could predict travel times on those SoCal highways ... that would be something!)

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Harry Potter has unsurprisingly created a spike in interest and attendance at Universal Studios Hollywood. It has also fueled interest in of one of our most popular posts — when to use the Universal Express Ticket (formerly known as the Front of Line Pass) . His West Coast arrival draws Potter fans who can't make the trip to Orlando. The locals love him too. We're expecting this surge (or... lighting bolt?) of interest in Universal Studios Hollywood to continue over the next few years. And there are always whispers of Wizarding additions. Aparecium!

It's probably a good time to talk about Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. While it's opening in an entirely different park, it will have some impact on crowds at Universal Studios Hollywood after it opens in summer 2019, and we have adjusted our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar levels up in anticipation of this. While the crowds won't be as high at Universal Studios Hollywood as they will be at Disneyland, so factor that in when looking at the crowd calendar, but no doubt many of the people who will make the trek to LA to experience Star Wars land at Disneyland Resort will also decide to hop over to Universal Studios Hollywood.

How Locals Influence the Best Times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2019 and 2020

Best Times To Visit Universal Studios Hollywood 2019 and 2020 - Waterworld

If you’re used to visiting Universal Orlando Resort rather than the Hollywood original, know that there are some differences. The best times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2019 and 2020 aren't necessarily the same ones at Universal Orlando. The biggest difference are the locals. Universal Orlando has locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles regional area. More and more of these locals are annual passholders, who think nothing of popping in for a pint of Butterbeer after the end of a long week.

While the regional passholders have a large influence on crowds, it's not all doom and gloom. Many passholders have blockout times during the times most popular with tourists — mostly summer, spring break and the holidays, but also a few weekends here and there. Looking at Universal's Silver Annual Pass available days calendar gives you a fairly good idea of the very busiest dates of the year. This is because these are the times when most of the passholders are not allowed to enter. From the second half of June through early August, the Silver Annual Passholders are blocked from entering the park entirely. That's a sure sign that there will be tourists!

what is the price for express pass at universal studios at the gate compare to buying them on the site?

Hi Estella!

You can find online prices for the tickets with the Express option here via Universal. The price can vary at the park, and if the crowds are higher than expected, the price goes up. Expect prices to be higher and availability to be lower at the park. We have seen it be $70 to add on in the park, but that may be different when you visit. It can go up as the day goes on, so it’s hard to say for certain.

Hi Lisa!

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday tend to be better days to visit theme parks. You will be very happy with Universal Express during summer crowds and it will make it easier to do everything on your wish list.

Hi Shreya!

With it being spring break season, things will be fairly busy from now until the end of April. We suggest heading on a Tuesday or Wednesday and springing for the Express Pass if you're able. You'll be able to do everything in one day with the Express Pass, which frees up another day to see all that LA has to offer (or to relax by the pool)!

Hi Christina!

With an Express Pass you should be able to do it all in one day. We recommend one day with Express Pass, and using another day of your vacation to explore Los Angeles and other attractions.

Hi Scott!

According to our Crowd Calendar, March 5 and 6 would be the best bests for your two day pass. Crowds are rated moderately at a 5 and 6, so wait times should be moderate as well. Depending on your comfort with lines and waiting, we suggest checking things out once you get there and upgrading if need be (though there's definitely something to be said for hopping to the front of every line)!

I will be in LA I’m february during the Presidents Day weekend (on your list of worst times to go). If you had a choice of Sunday, Monday (Presidents Day) or the day after Tuesday which would you pick? Sunday and Monday, the park closes at 9 pm. The park closes at 6 pm Tuesday. Which do you recommend?

Reply
Jan 29, 2019 at 11:37 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Dave,

With the park closing so early on Tuesday, that is a strong indicator that big crowds are not expected. That said, it also means that you have less time to do everything you want to do, so factor it in. If you are planning to arrive ahead of opening (which we always recommend), then we'd still pick Tuesday.

Hi there, we have a 2 day ticket and are planning on going to Universal Studio in LA on Sunday Dec 2nd and/or the 9th. Do you think there will be alot more people on Sundays compared to weekdays like the 5th and the 11th? We notice that we get atleast 2 extra park hours on weekends, whereas weekdays usually open an hour later and closes an hour earlier (sometimes 2). So can you provide some insight whether we should stick to Sundays or go on weekdays we specified above instead? Thanks!

Trying to decide whether a one day pass on sep 28 will be enough for our family 2 adults 2 kids, 8 and 11. We would like to ride and see everything, but 10am-6pm seems very short. We are considering a 2 day pass but would not be able to get there til 2pm on thurs 27th ( then the whole day fri 28th). We cant make a decision!!

Hi. I am planning to take mykids to Universal Studios for the first time on Sat, Sept 29-Sun, Sept 30 or Sunday, Sept 30- Monday October 1? Which days are better for less crowds?

Also, is there Halloween events going on that will scare my kids when they walk around?

Hi Melissa!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts Monday October 1 will be the least busy. There are some spooky Halloween props out but nothing too scary.

Hi there! We’ll be in LA on Oct 7-8 (Columbus Day weekend). I see that there may be slightly elevated crowds. Do you think there will be any difference between going Sunday (the 7th) vs Columbus Day? We generally avoid theme parks on the weekend, but in this case will Columbus Day be just as bad? (I’d rather go Sunday, because it works better for our schedule). Thanks for all the great tips!

Hi Janie!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts that the park will be just about equally busy on both days, so go whichever day works best for you!

Traveling 12/18 thru 12/20/18. On calendar says crowd to be high. Express pass recommended even though they are weekday versus the week before Christmas. Thank you.
