Summary

You long-time frog fans know Tad as our official frog family videographer. While he toadally enjoys making ride videos for our YouTube channel, he really has set his sights on becoming the next Spielberg. For him, it doesn't get any better than Universal Studios Hollywood. It's a thrill for him to be "on location" inside the theme park that just so hoppens to be where "Back to the Future" and "Psycho" were filmed. And we know he's not the only one who's excited to visit! With the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more family-friendly attractions, this theme park/working studio sure is more hopping than ever! Plus, in early 2023, we get to explore Super Nintendo World. Woohoo! Whether you have a filmmaker in your family or you're just a bunch of fun-seekers, it helps to know not only what to expect when visiting Universal Studios Hollywood, but also, when to plan your trip. And, action!

When to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 and 2024

Best Time to Go to Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 - Dates by Season

While there is no reservation system in place at Universal Studios Hollywood, tickets are date-based, effectively limiting capacity each day through the number of tickets sold.

That means it's more important than ever to purchase your tickets ahead of time so that your preferred dates aren't sold out. And one other piece of advice: During our recent trips, Express Passes have become more useful than ever in maximizing our time at the parks. Much like admission, it's best to purchase your Express Passes in advance (they can sell out, and more so, the advanced online price is usually the lowest). (Psst ... Undercover Tourist can save you some green on your tickets, as well as Express Pass!)

Undercover Tourist's #1 ranked Crowd Calendar will show you projected crowd levels, events taking place and even the average weather, all in one place!

Our Los Angeles Crowd Calendar is the best tool to help you get a day-by-day look at expected crowds a full year in advance. If your particular dates are not listed, jump down to the comments below and ask. We frogs will be hoppy to answer. We've got a similar post devoted to the best and worst times to visit Disneyland if you hoppen to be planning visits to both. How Locals Influence the Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 and 2024

If you’re used to visiting Universal Orlando Resort rather than the Hollywood original, know that there are some differences. The best times to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 and 2024 aren't necessarily the same ones at Universal Orlando.

The biggest difference is the locals. Universal Orlando has locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles regional area. More and more of these locals are annual passholders, who think nothing of popping in for a pint of Butterbeer after the end of a long week. A lot of passholders visit on Saturdays, so that may influence you to visit during the week if you can.

While the regional passholders have a large influence on crowds, it's not all doom and gloom. Many passholders have blackout times during the times most popular with tourists — mostly summer, spring break and the holidays, but also a few weekends here and there. Looking at Universal's Silver Annual Pass available days calendar gives you a fairly good idea of the very busiest dates of the year. This is because these are the times when most of the passholders are not allowed to enter.

Now let's hop into the key topic at hand — the dates of the best and worst times for crowds at Universal Studios Hollywood. The big unknown right now is when Super Nintendo World will open in early 2023. Once we have exact dates, we'll update below accordingly! Hop over to our full guide to see all that we know about Super Nintendo World. With the 100 Years of Wonder celebration kicking off at Disneyland in late January 2023, we expect February and March to be busier than usual in the greater Los Angeles area. Likewise, summer breaks are a big draw at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Expected Busiest Days at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023

Here are the days we expect to be the busiest at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023:

  • Jan. 1-8, Jan. 13-16
  • Feb. 17-20
  • March 11 - April 16
  • Weekends in May, plus Memorial Day
  • Second half of June
  • July
  • Aug. 1-13
  • Sept. 1-4; Sept. 22-25
  • Oct. 2-23
  • Nov. 17-26
  • Dec. 17-31

Expected Busiest Days at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2024

Here are the days we expect to be the busiest at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2024:

  • Jan. 1-7, Jan. 12-15
  • Feb. 16-19
  • March 9 - April 7
  • Weekends in May, plus Memorial Day
  • Second half of June
  • July
  • Aug. 1-11
  • Aug. 30 - Sept. 2
  • Oct. 2-14
  • Nov. 22 - Dec. 1
  • Dec. 21-31

*The fall of Easter impacts Universal crowds in the spring. Some school districts base their spring break around Easter; others do not. When Easter falls earlier in the season, March or early April, it has the effect of making a more intense, but shorter spring break season. That's the case in both 2023, when Easter is April 9, and 2024, when Easter is March 31. When Easter falls later, the effect is a longer but less intense spring break season. Many California universities consistently have spring break at the end of March, which can affect crowds then.

Hi Andtiff!

Thanks for hopping by! Aside from scheduled refurbishments or unexpected closures, rides typically do not close because of the holiays. Park hours are usually shorter during the week, so there may be limited nighttime entertainment (compared to weekend holiday experiences).

Hi Tom!

Since both options are weekdays in early November, it likely won't be a necessity (though you could always purchase at the park if you change your mind). Either day would be fine — crowds would be about the same — so feel free to choose whichever one works better with your schedule.

Hey we are visiting for one day Sunday 22nd of October (this is a HHN day but we won't be attending). We are unlikely to do the movie tour as we did it a couple of years ago, but wondered if we should get express passes given that HHN will likely mean we need to leave the park earlyish?

Hi Russ!

You may not need it. However, you can purchase in the park if wait times are longer than you'd hoped for. Because the park closes early, Express can certainly help. But if you get there before park opening to rope drop and knock out the Lower Lot after park opening, then we think you'll be in pretty good shape without it.

Hi. I'm planning on going to Universal Studios Hollywood Oct 11 and debating between the Express pass OR the one day general admission + 2nd day free (also another day that week, probably Oct 12). Is Oct 11 a day that you'd recommend the Express pass?

Reply
Sep 22, 2022 at 5:24 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Yuri!

It's a holiday week (Fall Break) for some schools, which could increase crowds for a school day. You can either take it slow and go for two days or hit it all in one day with Express. You could also opt to buy a regular ticket and then assess in the park whether you feel like you need to upgrade.

We are coming to LA for a few weeks arriving Easter weekend next year. We were intending to stay in LA for a few days right away and go to Universal, but then I had a look at your crowd calendar, and see you have April 21st to 28th listed as a quieter time of the year. So now we are thinking of coming back to LA at the end of our holiday instead. We will probably come from the Friday to Monday (leaving for NZ on Monday night). Our TA currently has buy a day get a day free tix for next year. Which day/s would you recommend? Will anything special be going on over Easter weekend that we might miss if we change our dates?

Many thanks!

It really depends on the local spring break calendars, which can vary. But most spring breaks fall in early April so you may be able to avoid the crowds by waiting.

Reply
Aug 17, 2022 at 1:57 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Candice!

There aren't any rides that close to remove Halloween overlays, as Haunted Mansion Holiday stays open and the other Halloween rides in DCA only have changes to the songs and lighting so they don't need any time to close in between. Just keep in mind that other rides could undergo normal refurbishment (we keep our Refurbishment post updated weekly), and there are nights that the parks can close earlier and entertainment can be more limited.

We are planning a trip to replace a graduation trip that was cancelled due to covid and everything being shut down two years ago. Original trip was planned for October (would have been our third Halloween Horror Nights trip) but with 2 in college had to change it up and now looking at December 28 to Jan 1. We always stay on sight and get express passes but what kind of crowds are we looking at? About the same as when we come in October or bigger because kids are out of school.

Hello and Thank you for such a comprehensive breakdown to plan a day at Universal Studios- Hollywood! Sorry if I missed this or if someone has already asked but does the park always open about 30 mins early? Also, if I'm understanding your instructions correctly, if we get in early, go to Harry Potter ride but if we get in right at 10 when it opens go to the lower lot first?

Reply

Hi Siobhan!

You are so welcome - thanks for stopping by! The park usually does open 30 minutes early, but each day could vary. Usually, just the Wizaring World is open 30 minutes early and the access to the Lower Lot would open more at park opening. We recommend hitting the Lower Lot once it opens. But if you want to make a quick visit to the Wizarding World, you can do that and then head to the Lower Lot once it opens. Don’t dwell too long in Wizarding World as you can easily hop back later.

Hi Nerissa!

We've never regretted having Universal Express — that said, it's not a particularly busy week (but it is a weekend day) so it may not be necessary. If you do decide not to get the Express ticket and want to upgrade in the park, keep in mind that your discount may or may not work in the park. (If not, then you'd have to pay more or wait in standby lines.) We usually suggest Single Rider lines to skip long lines if you don't have Express, but most have closed so it is a bit harder to skip lines without Express. With all things considered, it's toadally up to you!

Hi!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Universal Hollywood for our 1 year anniversary :) we are deciding between going on Saturday June 25 and Monday, June 27. It looks like The park is open 3 hours longer on Saturday than on Monday (June hours are not posted yet, so just going based off other months). I’m trying to weigh out park time/ vs crowds. Do you think there will be a significant crowd difference between that Saturday and that Monday? If it would be about the same, it would probably be best to go when we get more hours. Also, I’ve seen Mondays are better for potential celeb sightings on the backlots, which is another reason we were considering Monday. Neither of us have been to universal, so we want to see as much as possible, without the extra front of the line passes if possible. What day would you pick?

Thank you!!

Hi Krysta!

Since it's in the peak of summer, the crowd levels will likely be similar. We would definitely go with Saturday! The later hours will give you more time (and more chances to see the Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle show at night). Even we frogs have yet to catch a celebrity sighting on the Backlot (in fact, you're more likely to get diverted away from some parts of the Studio Tour if they're actively filming during the week) — and the better tours tend to fall on the weekend. Hope this helps!

Hi- First of all I love your blog and have been visiting your site for years :)

We will be in LA the first weekend of May and could go to Universal on a Saturday morning or Sunday. Which do you recommend? How early should we arrive to avoid the biggest crowds? Also, is the Front Gate parking worth the extra cost?

Thanks!

Reply
Mar 18, 2022 at 11:21 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi K!

Thank you for hopping by all these years! We think Saturday and Sunday crowds would be about the same (depending on if it's the April 30/May 1 or May 7/8 weekend — keep in mind that May 8 is Mother's Day, though usually crowds aren't affected by it too much). Parking structures open an hour early, so plan to be at the park gates at least 30 minutes early. The Front Gate parking is right there by security, while Preferred is in a nearby structure and Regular is about a 10-15 minute walk. Front Gate has the shortest walk possible, but it's pricey so we usually get Preferred. But, especially if anyone in your group has limited mobility, it may be worth the extra cost!

Hi Martin!

We think either date would be fine, so go with whichever one works best with your schedule! Crowds will be moderate so Universal Express probably wouldn't be absolutely necessary, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have if you are more averse to waiting in long lines and can swing the higher-priced ticket! Also, you could wait and see until you're there — if you change your mind, you may be able to upgrade at the park (as long as it isn't sold out).

Weekends are generally busier, but with varied prices for tickets based on anticipated crowds, we do see ticket buyers opt for the least expensive days, which may fall during the week.

Hi, we (family of 4) are going to Universal Studios Hollywood this coming labor day weekend (Either Sunday or Monday). I was wondering what crowds would be like ? Should we consider the platinum annual pass? Is it worth it? Thank you!

Hi Mary!

Any holiday weekend has the potential for crowds. The platinum pass has no blackout dates and includes a free Halloween Horror ticket for select nights, but the policy for Universal Express recently changed. You now get Universal Express access to each ride, attraction and show but only after 3 p.m. If you plan to visit at least 5 times in the next 12 months, can take advantage of the Express access and plan to use your Horror Night ticket, then it’s toadally worth it!

Hello, I know dates for the holiday season hasn’t been realized but in the past when does Universal Hollywood normally begin their Christmas holiday decorating and festivities? Is it possibly Thanksgiving week?

Thank you

Hi Tina!

The dates have varied in the past. In 2019, the holiday festivities started on Thanksgiving Day. But in 2018, it started as early as Nov. 17. So, if you're visiting during Thanksgiving week (particularly toward the end of it), there may be a chance that you'll catch some of the holiday decor and festivities.

Hello, we are from Germany and wanted to go to Universal in Florida in June. Because of Corona we are now thinking of coming to California in late August instead (Hope the Situation will be better til then). Are there any Hotels at Universal Hollywood you can get Early Entry or the Express Pass unlimited when you stay there like in Florida? I didn‘t find something in the Internet.... Thank you so much for helping us!

Hi Christine!

Unfortunately no, Universal Studios Hollywood does not offer Early Entry or Express Unlimited with hotel stays like they do in Orlando. Unlimited Express is available for separate purchase though!

That timeframe should be busy throughout, so we'd choose what works best for you! Weekdays should be slightly better than weekends. You can see a day-by-day forecast here.

Hi! We are planning to visit Universal Studios Hollywood on Feb 9th 2020 we have 2 kids ages 7 and 8. Do you think we need to purchase the express pass? If we don't, how long are the waits for rides? Mahalo

Reply

Hi Dori!

Wait times can vary based on the rides, but you can expect 20-40 minute waits for most rides. It should not be a busy time, but follow our touring plan to get the lowest wait times per ride! Be sure to knock out the Lower Lot in the morning for the shortest wait times there. Have fun!

With the shorter hours in February....will we be able to enjoy all the thrill rides in the park in one day? Either Tuesday 2/12 or Friday 2/14?

Reply
Jan 14, 2020 at 3:12 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Kelly!

Great question! We think so. If the rides are your priority ad you arrive at park opening, you should be able to get them in. If you qualify for Single Rider, that can help shave some time off longer lines. You probably will not be able to catch all the shows. Keep your eye on the last tram time of the day for the Studio Tour. Have fun!

Will February 10-13 be busy at Universal Orlando? My son is 10 and my daughter is 14, which park would be better for our family as we are only staying one day Thanks

Hi Sandy!

That time looks to be low in terms of crowds (5/10) according to our Crowd Calendar! Both parks are super fun, so our first suggestion would be to pick a One Day Park-to-Park ticket so that you can take the Hogwarts Express between the two. If you aren't able to swing a park-to-park, we'd suggest Universal's Islands of Adventure. Have fun!

Hi Emily!

You can check out our Crowd Calendar for projected crowd levels on specific days here. This whole week is a busy one, so we'd spring for either Express Passes at Universal or MaxPass at Disney if you can! Universal Studios Hollywood is a great fit for your Jurassic Park and Harry Potter lovers, while Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park are good picks for Frozen and Mickey lovers. Have a great time!

Hi. Is the VIP experience worth it for May 11th 2020? It looks like crowds will be okay so not sure if paying for the extras like breakfast/lunch will e worth the added expense.

Reply
Dec 30, 2019 at 12:48 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Samantha!

The VIP experience can be worth it if you want access to experiences that are not shown to other park guests. But if rides and main show are your priority, you can save with an Express Pass. While this can be a slower time without long lines, if the park hours are short then it can be challenging to see it all on your own without Express.

Hi Rich!

That day is expected to be a 7/10 in terms of crowds, according to our Crowd Calendar, so we'd spring for Express if you can! An alternative, if you think they're mostly in it for the Harry Potter experience, is to wait and see how you feel once you arrive and upgrade in the park if passes are still available.

Hi

Going for the first time to Universal with my 20 and 17 year olds. Arriving may 25-29

How bad will crowds? And is Volcano Bay worth going to on our 3rd day, or do you recommend pool hopping since we will be at Loews Pacific Resort

Reply
Nov 24, 2019 at 10:05 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Beth,

Since you'll be arriving on Memorial Day, we'd expect higher crowds that day, but the rest of the week should have medium crowds (crowd level 6 on our Crowd Calendar), as local schools are still usually wrapping up the school year that week. We'd toadally recommend Universal's Volcano Bay! With its TapuTapu virtual line system, you don't have to worry about waiting in long lines for the slides.

Hi we're planning our very first trip to universal studios on Friday October 25th. Do you think it'll be a manageable day? We also have a 4yo who's super excited for Jurassic Park wanting to see blue and is so intrigued with Harry Potter. So this is why we are going. Besides these 2 attractions what else do you recommend for her and us??

Hi Amanda!

Be sure to meet meet Juliet, the Triceratops, Tango, the baby raptor and maybe even some Transformers. The Dino Play area in the Lower Lot will be fun, as well as Super Silly Fun Land in the Upper Lot. Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem will be fun if he is tall enough. Bring a swim suit for the water play area! Kung Fu Panda and the Studio Tour are great. In the Wizarding World, make sure to do the castle walk through even if he is not tall enough for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Attend a wand pairing, purchase an interactive wand and cast spells. Don’t miss the animal actors show! Have a wonderful time :)
