How to Choose Your Universal Orlando Tickets (Plus How to Save!)

Inside This Post Inside This Post

Today, we're walking you through all of the different ticket types, including the Universal Park-to-Park ticket, and providing a few details to help you choose the best Universal Orlando ticket for your family. Whether you're looking to include Volcano Bay or opting for a Park-to-Park or Base ticket, we've got you covered! Plus, we'll run through the best ways to save money on your Universal Orlando tickets (hint: we know some frogs that offer hoppin' discounts!). Let's jump in!

Choosing the Best Universal Orlando Tickets - Globe

Universal Orlando Resort is a whoa-worthy destination, where you'll come face-to-face with dinosaurs, fast cars, wizardry, minions and so much more! There is a ton to tackle at Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Volcano Bay, which is why choosing the best Universal Orlando ticket for your family is so critical! We know it can be difficult to decide how many days and which ticket — or even which Universal park is best for your fam. But never fear, your resident theme park experts are here!

A Look at Universal Orlando Theme Parks

There is a lot to see and do — Universal Orlando just keeps growing and growing! Visitors can now enjoy a brand-new DreamWorks Land, which features family-friendly rides, character greetings and more. In even bigger news, in summer 2025, an entirely new park will open called Universal Epic Universe. When this new gate opens, we may revisit our advice! But for now, most families visiting Universal Orlando will want to spend three to four days in the parks. But what if you only have one day? It's toadally subjective, but we're gonna answer this (and even give you our top tips for saving some money on your next Universal Orlando vacay). But first, let's take a quick look at the parks.

Universal Studios Florida

Choosing the Best Universal Orlando Tickets - The Mummy

This park is home to some amazing thrill and family rides based on blockbuster movies such as Transformers the Ride: 3D, Revenge of the Mummy and Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem. It's also home to the amazingly detailed Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley, plus Knockturn Alley (one of our favorite Universal Studios Florida hidden gems). We have an entire guide dedicated to the rides, food and experiences you won't want to miss at Universal Studios Florida. This park also hosts seasonal events such as Halloween Horror Nights, Mardi Gras and Grinchmas.

Universal Islands of Adventure

Choosing the Best Universal Orlando Tickets - VelociCoaster

There are multiple lands, or is-lands rather, to discover at this park that features epic attractions such as Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, the Incredible Hulk Coaster, Jurassic World VelociCoaster and the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man. The park is home to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade. Here's what not to miss at Islands of Adventure for even more information on this incredible park!

Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure & Universal Volcano Bay Ticket Types

There are quite a few ticket options for the Universal Orlando Resort, including Universal Volcano Bay water theme park. As always, as an authorized theme park ticket seller, we're hoppy to offer Universal Orlando tickets and hotels at a discount.

  • The Universal Base Ticket entitles you to admission at Universal Studios Florida OR Universal Islands of Adventure for each day of your ticket (one park per day). You have an additional option of adding on Universal Volcano Bay for each day of your ticket (one park per day) with the 3-Day, 4-Day and 5-Day base tickets. For example, with a Universal 3-Day Base Ticket, you could go to Universal Studios on Monday, Universal Islands of Adventure on Tuesday and then go back to Universal Studios on Wednesday. Another example is the Universal 3-Day Base Ticket with Volcano Bay, which would allow you to visit Universal Studios on Monday, Universal Islands of Adventure on Tuesday and Universal Volcano Bay on Wednesday. Of course, which days you choose is up to you. And that brings us to another important point: Most of Universal's tickets are now date-based. That means you must pick a start date for your visit, and will be assigned a usage window.
  • The Universal Park-to-Park Ticket entitles you to admission at Universal Studios Florida AND Universal Islands of Adventure for each day of your ticket (giving you the freedom to hop back and forth between the two parks). For instance, let's say you purchase a Universal 2-Day Park-to-Park Ticket. On Monday, you could go to Universal Studios Florida for the first half of the day, then head over to Universal Islands of Adventure for the afternoon. On Wednesday, you could start at Universal Islands of Adventure, go to Universal Studios Florida in the afternoon and then end the day back at Universal Islands of Adventure. Another option is the Universal 3-Park Park-to-Park Ticket with Volcano Bay, which would allow you to visit all three parks every day for three days. It's important to note that if riding the Hogwarts Express is a must for you, you must have a Park-to-Park ticket to do so.

You now have the option to choose from 1-Day, 2-Day, 3-Day, 4-Day and 5-Day tickets for your vacation. Are you a Florida resident? We've even got you covered with the Florida Resident Power Pass! We also offer discount Express Passes, which let you skip the regular lines, and VIP Experience tickets for the ultimate red carpet treatment.

Looking for Epic Universe tickets? Stay tuned! Details on tickets for this incredible new park have not yet been released, but we'll be sure to update as soon as we know more.

More Hopful Ticket Info

  • The expiration of Universal tickets is generally dictated by the number of days. You will activate the ticket upon entry to your first Universal Orlando Resort Theme Park.
  • Parking for all three parks (at Universal CityWalk) is not included with tickets and is currently $32 per day for regular parking. If you are staying at a Universal hotel, free transportation to the parks is included with your stay.
  • The Universal Express Pass, which allows you to skip the regular lines on most of Universal Orlando's attractions, is a separate purchase and can be bought from us or directly from Universal, including in the parks. Don't worry — we have a whole post about when to use Universal Express. (And if you stay at a Universal premier hotel, Express Unlimited is included with your stay.)
  • Want an even steeper discount on your vacation? Bundle select Universal tickets with a 2-night Universal Orlando hotel stay to save an additional $40!

Is Base or Park-to-Park the Best Universal Orlando Ticket?

Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Volcano Bay are on the same property and within walking distance of each other, making the Park-to-Park Ticket a popular choice. Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure are right next door to each other, so it's super easy to hop between them.

Choosing the Best Universal Orlando Tickets - Hogwarts Express

The Universal Park-to-Park Ticket type gives you more flexibility than the Base Ticket type. Plus the Park-to-Park ticket is the only way to experience the Hogwarts Express, which takes you between both Wizarding Worlds. It's also a different experience in each direction. The Universal Park-to-Park ticket is a good choice when one park closes earlier than the others. For instance, if Universal Studios Florida closes at 5 p.m. and Universal Islands of Adventure closes at 7 p.m., the Park-to-Park ticket allows you to leave Universal Studios Florida and have two hours to enjoy the rides at Universal Islands of Adventure. (You can see park hours on our Crowd Calendar.)

The Universal Base Ticket is a good choice if you are traveling with little ones and one park per day is plenty, you don't care to experience the Hogwarts Express or you just want the lowest-priced ticket.

How Many Days Should We Stay at Universal?

Choosing Best Tickets for Universal Orlando - Royal Pacific

With so many thrills to tackle, and so many great Universal hotel choices, it makes sense to stay and play longer at Universal Orlando. If you plan on visiting Volcano Bay, you may consider adding a day to your visit, or you could tack on water park time in the afternoons or evenings after a day in the other parks. How long to stay depends on many factors, including the ages and interests of your kids, your own interests, whether you are staying on property, how leisurely you like to tour the parks and how busy the parks will be during your visit. Most families visiting Universal Orlando Resort will want to spend three to four days in the parks, so we recommend five to seven days total to make the most of the property. If you're doing a combined visit to Walt Disney World, you would probably want to do two to three days at Universal.

Consider a longer stay if ...

  • You and your kids are thrill-seekers and meet the height requirements for most rides (40 inches)
  • You want to see and do everything during your visit
  • The parks are expected to be busy
  • You like to tour the parks leisurely and/or you don't like to get out of bed early
  • You are staying at a Universal Orlando hotel and want more time to enjoy the hotel pools and amenities

Great site! My family of 4 are going to Universal Orlando Dec 19-25. I'm thinking a 4 day 2 park pass (no volcano bay) is what we'll be getting. Having a hard time deciding how many days we buy Express and Park-2-Park for. Would a 2 day 1 Park with Express, then a 2 day Park-2-Park no express be a good choice? I'm traveling with a huge Potter fan so I know at least one day we need park-2-park pass so we can ride the train. It's going to be raining all day Thursday so we thought Blue Man Group would be good that day, then hit Universal parks Fri-Tues. What would you do? :)

Hi Jessica!

That's a tough call. Both parks have equally fun, awesome offerings for all age and thrill levels, so it really depends on which interests your group more. We recommend checking out the attractions list for each and making a decision based on that!

Hi,

I have 4 days in Orlando during Christmas time. I am planning to visit Universal with my 2 year old kid for a day. Which ticket you suggest for 1 day base at universal Florida or park to park including islands of adventure.Rides will be limited with kid. Please suggest. Is park to park worth roaming with kid?

Hi David!

With your 2 year old along for the day, it will be tough for you to tackle any of the big coasters (unless you have another grown-up to trade off with.) With this being said, we think it's totally worth getting the park-to-park ticket so you can explore the sights and sounds of BOTH parks. Islands of Adventure has the SUPER kid-friendly Seuss area, and Universal Studios Florida has a couple different kids' areas including one dedicated to Curious George. There are tons of neat things for you to explore in each park too.

Hi - We are looking to go to Orlando in April 2019 with my kiddo (9) and the grandparents. We will be staying at Disneyworld and will have 4 full days and one partial day to explore. We are thinking of doing a combination of Universal Orlando and Disneyworld, and maybe something else outside of the two parks. Any recommendations? Right now I am leaning towards Universal Orlando (2 park hopper since Harry Potter is a must and we live in LA and have seen many of the other rides), Disney Animal Kingdom, one or two of the water parks (any recommendations?) and maybe something outside of the parks like Gator Land or something? Thanks!

Hi Jennifer!

OMG, how fun! As far as waterparks go, we toadally recommend Volcano Bay (hint, hint ... check out our guide!) It's Universal's gorgeous waterpark that just opened last year. We're obsessed!

Universal Orlando and Disney's Animal Kingdom are GREAT choices. Gatorland and other small attractions can be fun, but we recommend staying at the parks, where there is SO much to do (and you don't have to go out of your way too far.)

We will be at Universal during the first week of February.

I want to do Volcano Bay, but it might be too cold that time of year. On the other hand, it might be just fine. Depends on the weather and if there's a "cold wave" or not.

If I buy a 2 day Park to Park ticket (the promo where you buy a 2 day pass and get 2 days Free), do I have the option to upgrade that pass in the park?

I understand you can upgrade tickets to annual passes, but I'm not clear if I can upgrade a 2 Park ticket to a 3 Park ticket.

If I can upgrade the ticket for a reasonable fee, that would be perfect. That way I only pay for the 2 parks if it's too cold for Volcano Bay (if it's really cold it will be closed anyway).

What do you think?

Each part of Harry Potter World has its main attraction as well as other entertainment, shopping and dining. Both are unique experiences, so it's tough to choose! Hi there,

With the 2-Park 3-day Base Ticket, you'll have admission for 3 days to both Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure (the ticket does exclude Volcano Bay, though). Because it's a base ticket, you can only enter one park per day. So, you won't be able to start the day at Islands of Adventure and then head over to Universal Studios for the afternoon. You also won't be able to experience the Hogwarts Express, which we think is a huge miss, especially if you're a big Harry Potter fan!

I find the tickets for Universal very confusing. I am looking to visit the 2 parks and the water park but only one park a day. Trying to work out the on-site hotels for Universal 5/28-5/31. Are we better to go with Sapphire where spacious suites are available but no Ultimate Express Passes or go with Portofino (with largest available is only a Deluxe room) to get the Ultimate Express passes. We can't buy an Ultimate Express pass correct? Just a regular Express that is only good for once per ride correct? Our main focus is Harry Potter. Ages 50s and 15 and 17. Do you think the Ultimate Pass is essential for our dates and HP focus? Does a regular Express come with the Sapphire? Thanks - 1st timer here - so I appreciate your insight!

Hi Carol,

It's really up to you, but if it were me, I would go with Portofino to get the passes provided it's not completely out of budget. It's going to be fairly busy, and the standard rooms at Portofino are larger than most other standard rooms on property.

Sapphire does not offer any Express benefit, although it does include an hour early entry.

We have already purchased a 3 day park hopper for Universal Orlando which we plan to use for the 2 main parks. I read we can add Volcano Bay to any ticket for a flat fee of $42.60. How do I add that?

My wife and 2 kids (6 and 10) are doing a Disney/Universal trip in late June/early July. Can we get away with a one day park-to-park pass for Universal Studios and I.O.A or do I buy one day base tickets to each park?

Hi Chris!

If you choose to do one day park-to-park, we would recommend getting the Express passes as well, since this is a busy time of year. Otherwise, shoot for one day at each park.

We’ll be visiting the parks may 21-May 23 and I’ll be buying the promotional tickets that gives you two days for free. So if I have the five day base ticket and I’m only there for three day would I be able to enter one park then use one of my extra day tickets to enter another park the same day?

Hi Josh,

In order to enter the different parks on the same day, you'll need to purchase a Park-to-Park ticket. The base tickets only allow you to enter one park per day (even if you have multiple days).

Hi Shannon,

You should check out the Universal 3-Day Park-to-Park Ticket with Volcano Bay. This ticket will allow you to visit all of the parks (including Volcano Bay) for 3 days, and allow you to hop between each park in the same day if you wish. You'll have to purchase Express passes separately from Universal Orlando!

Hi Amanda,

If you're wanting to do both Universal Orlando parks (Universal Studios and Universal's Islands of Adventure) in one day with Volcano Bay another, we recommend the 2-Day Park-to-Park Ticket with Volcano Bay. This will allow you access to all parks and allows you to hop back and forth between each park on the same day. Hope this helps!

Hi Autumn!

You'll find Mickey and the princesses at the Walt Disney World parks, and Harry Potter, Transformers and superheroes at Universal Orlando. Keep in mind that these are two separate properties! We recommend the Marvel character dinner at Universal and Cinderella's Royal Table at Disney.

Hi Natalie,

You'll have to purchase another ticket. When you enter the park on the first day, you'll have to provide your fingerprint to tie the ticket to you. Therefore, no one else will be able to use it!

I am trying to compare the discounted 4 day 3 park to park ticket (with discount $275 each), with the 2 park season pass (with discount $285 each). Is there any reason not to spend the extra $10 and get the season ticket? Thank you for your assistance with this.

Hi there,

The 2-park season pass gives you access to Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure, but not to Volcano Bay. With the 3 park-to-park ticket, you'll have access to all 3 for four days. It depends on what's most important to you!

Is the park hopper ticket like a bracelet that is scanned like Disney? or is it a paper ticket that you have to present each day?

Hi there,

Universal does not offer a bracelet-type ticket; the ticket is a card that is scanned each day!

I'm looking at ticket prices for a 7 day trip. What is the difference between a 5-day 3-park ticket and a 3-park unlimited ticket? It sounds like the second ticket can be used for more than 5 days, which we might not need, but the prices are similar (+$30 for the second), so I'm trying to see if I understand them correctly. Thanks!

Hi Kerry!

The 3-park unlimited ticket is good for unlimited access to the parks for two whole weeks! It's a pretty great deal and we toad-ally recommend it if you'll be sticking around for a while and want to explore the parks at your leisure without the pressure of cramming all attractions in to a limited number of days.

Hello, I have just brought the 3 park explorer pass for universal studios for May 2018 from Expedia, before booking it said I have 14 days of unlimited access to the 3 parks, however when I just received my conformation the first thing I noticed was reservation dates 3rd of May to the 5th of May!? So I’m worried now but does the resavtion dates possibly mean that’s the dates I can validate my ticket then receive the 14 days? I’m so confused help?!

Hi Reece!

Hmmm - that's odd. We would recommend reaching out to Expedia to get to the bottom of that. You are correct in that it should offer you 14 days of unlimited access, and we would guess that May 3-5 are the days that you are able to activate it. Give Expedia a call to make sure before you make your way here! Let us know if we can help any further.

Yes, you can add another day after using your first three. We're not quite sure on the price as it depends on the day - we recommend checking with guest services upon arrival.

We are going to universal for the apex cheer competition in march! We will ve buying park to park tickets but are undecided about volcano bay. We would love to see it but are not sure how much time we will be spending in the cheer competition that weekend and if we would even be able to fit it in. If I buy the 5 day 2 park tickets can I upgrade it to include volcano bay if we have the time to go?

Thanks!

Hi. Can you tell me is it best to buy express tickets and do in a day Or a two day tickets. Will I need that for each park if I buy express tickets. Or. If you stay in hotel for a night and get the free express tickets does that include 2 day park tickets or 1 day park ticket per a night. Trying to work out how best to do it. Thank you

Hi Tracy,

It depends on when you are going if Express Passes are totally necessary. We definitely recommend at least two days at Universal Orlando Resort to experience everything. If you stay in an on-site hotel that has the Express Unlimited Pass benefit, then you'll receive the pass for however long your hotel reservation is. Hope this helps!

We are staying at Cabana Bay for 3 weeks in August, what is the best way of getting 21 days of tickets for Universal to inc Sea World, Busch & maybe Disney?

Reply

FrogBlog Says...

Hi Jason,

This all depends on how many days you'd want to spend at each park. We would recommend a 10-day ticket for Disney World, 5-day park-to-park ticket at Universal, and an Unlimited Visits SeaWorld ticket (includes admission to any four of the SeaWorld parks for 14 days.) If you plan on spending significantly more time at Universal, we recommend considering purchasing Annual Passes. It may be more cost effective than purchasing daily tickets for such a long trip.

Hoppy planning!
