The Distant Future at Disneyland Resort

DisneylandForward

It's another step forward for DisneylandForward. Disneyland Resort got its final approval from the City of Anaheim, the city in which it is located, to expand the resort in multiple areas. On May 7, 2024, the city fully approved DisneylandForward. The long-term plan may come to fruition over the next few decades. The theme park, retail, hotel, dining, entertainment and parking options all get expanded, utilizing space around the resort. Disneyland will be developing the eastern and western edges of the Disneyland Resort.

What’s Coming to Disneyland Resort - DisneylandForward Parking and Transportation Hub

One of the first areas to change is a new parking structure and transportation hub off Disney Way with a pedestrian bridge across Harbor Boulevard to create a new access point to Disneyland. The bridge would upgrade accessibility for hotels and businesses located along Harbor Boulevard.

The Immersive Theme Park west side expansion includes a theme park expansion on the land that currently surrounds the Disneyland Hotel, parts of Downtown Disney, Disney's Pixar Place Hotel and some surrounding parking lots. The streets that surround this area include Katella Avenue, Walnut Street and Magic Way.

The other major area involved in the east-side expansion is the current Toy Story lot near the Anaheim Convention Center. The Disney Entertainment Destination expansion includes hotels, retail, dining, entertainment and theme park experiences.

What’s Coming to Disneyland Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood - Art for Avatar Land

As mentioned earlier, Disney confirmed that "Avatar" and "Coco" attractions are already in the works as part of this expansion!

There are eight more potential projects themed around "Frozen," "Tangled," "Peter Pan," "Zootopia," "Toy Story" "Black Panther," "Encanto" and "Tron." That could include new lands and attractions.

Construction will take place over the next 40 years! But it's toadally exciting to see what's coming to the Disneyland Resort!

Hi there! Love this ongoing article. Wanted to ask though; wasn't there an update to the treehouse near Haunted Mansion, as well as a Frozen experience added to the animation center? I don't see them listed here. Thanks!

Hi Jake!

This post is a running list of all the things that are opening in the future (or have recently opened within the same calendar year). The Adventureland Treehouse opened last year in 2023 (which we mentioned in our What Opened in 2023 post!). Anna and Elsa's Royal Welcome has been part of the Animation Center for several years, with a brief break during the pandemic, but they returned in late 2022.

I cannot wait til I can afford another Disneyland trip with my kids! We went in March and it was pure magic. I do want to take them back and get the obligatory castle pic since sleeping beauty castle was closed. I had a lot of people telling me I was nuts to take 3 kids to Disneyland in my own. I was widowed at 34, and the kids and I have done everything else alone for 3 years, so I knew we could do it. And we did... And it was great! I am not affiliated with anyone on this site but I booked with Undercover Tourist and it was easy, fast, and no troubles whatsoever. It was great to have our e tickets on my phone. Our tickets were way cheaper than buying them direct through Disney. Also, Antichrist mention of Allianz...I added their travel insurance last-minute and was glad I did. A problem without flight costed me several hundred dollars, but they made it easy to get that money back.

Even if it's probably a ways off, I will absolutely go through Undercover Tourist next time!

Now that the new Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride is opening on January 17, 2020, what do you expect crowds to be like around that time? On the crowd calendar, the last week of January seems to be the best time to go without crowds, but does that change with the new ride opening? Thanks for all your tips! They are beyond helpful!!

Hi Michelle!

You are so welcome - we are just hoppy to help, and glad that you took the time to say hello! The opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has shown everyone that it’s challenging to predict crowds. That is a period of time in between holidays that is traditionally low in crowds. While people are excited to ride this long-awaited ride, we do not expect high crowds at that time of year. Plus the new land is large and increases the size of the park so much, so that even if there are more people there, the park does not feel crowded. We hope this helps! Have a great trip!

Keep hopping!

I can't believe they can squeeze another hotel into Disneyland. I'm not terribly excited about Pixar Pier (it's an OK rebrand. whatever. meh) BUT the midcentury inspired restaurant replacing Ariel's Grotto? LOVE
