The Very Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando in 2023 and 2024

by Leap on May 8, 2023 5715 Orlando

Inside This Post Inside This Post

This is what Universal Orlando Resort trip planning sounds like around the Frog Pond: "We have to do Hagrid's first." "Are you crazy? Escape from Gringotts!" "I was thinking of splashing into the pool at Cabana Bay Beach Resort right after we check in." Yes. Even us savvy trip planners can get hung up on how to tackle a Universal Orlando vacation. One of the few things we can agree on is WHEN to visit. Crowd levels have a big impact on everyone's theme park vacation. This post outlines the very best time to visit Universal Orlando in 2023 and 2024, as well as some factors to keep in mind when planning your awesome Universal Orlando vacation.

Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando - Universal Globe

Planning When to Visit Universal Orlando in 2023 and 2024

While we have no crystal ball (we wish we did!), we do have historical trends available to pull from when making predictions. But there's one important caveat in 2023: As more families are hopping back into action, we expect that crowds will be heavier than usual throughout the year. That said, there will still be some times when crowds are lower. We're here to give you our best guesses on crowd levels based on our years of data collection and insights. And, action!

Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando in 2023 - Dates by Season

As we've said before with visiting Disney World, there's never a bad time to visit Universal Orlando. The Frog Family has hopped down during every season and successfully managed the crowds. We stick with our basic plan — get to the park at opening, take breaks in the afternoon when the parks are at their busiest, make use of our park plans and Orlando park plans app, and use Universal Express. For those of you who can, we highly recommend visiting the parks on weekdays, especially during peak times such as the week of Thanksgiving and the end of December into early January, as well as spring and summer breaks.

Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando - Loews Portofino Bay Resort

We also highly recommend you consider staying on-site at one of Universal’s official hotels that offer Universal Express Unlimited  basically unlimited skip-the-line access on most rides at Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure. The Universal hotels that offer the benefit are Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Universal's Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort. This skip-the-regular line benefit is a big help for saving time in the parks, especially if you're visiting on weekends. All Universal Orlando Resort hotels offer Early Park Admission, which is also a super hopful tool to get a jump on your day.

Keep in mind that the parks have and do hit capacity during peak times, even though a reservation system is not in place. We cannot emphasize enough just how much we recommend getting to the parks early! For even more tips for visiting Universal during peak times, hop over to our full post.

The sooner you can purchase your tickets, the better chance you'll have at selecting your desired dates (and the more hotel availability you'll find!). Planning ahead is the name of the game — and you've already taken the first step by reading this post :)

Other Factors to Consider When Determining the Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando

Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando - Family in Jurassic Park Area

Before booking your vacation to Universal on our site, we recommend you check our Crowd Calendar. You can get a view of the crowd levels by day, month or the whole year. You'll also find individual park recommendations so you can easily see at a glance the best times to visit, as well as Universal Orlando hours.

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - Velocioaster

There's no denying there are better times to visit Universal Orlando than others. It should come as no surprise that the best time to visit Universal Orlando usually falls along with school schedules. Generally, when the tadpoles are out of school, there are higher crowds at Universal. This applies to one-day holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a weeklong spring break or the big draw — summer vacation. The week of Thanksgiving and from Christmas into the new year are notably busy, as well.

Special events should also be a consideration in deciding the best time to visit, and they are also displayed on the crowd calendar. For example, Halloween Horror Nights can scare up a good crowd.

Big openings can also bring big crowds who want to be among the first to experience the thrills. Even openings and events at other resorts have some trickle-over effect. I mean, if you're already coming to Orlando, why not experience the Wizarding World too? In 2023, this ripple effect may be felt with the Disney 100 celebration, debuting at EPCOT in fall 2023.

So When Is the Best Time to Universal Orlando in 2023 and 2024?

The very best times to visit Universal Orlando in 2023 are ...

  • Jan. 18 – Feb. 15
  • March 1-10
  • April 17-30
  • Weekdays in the first half of May
  • The second half of August
  • Most days in September (minus the days around Labor Day)
  • Most weekdays in October (minus the days around Columbus Day)
  • Weekdays in November (minus the week of Thanksgiving)
  • Weekdays in December (minus the weeks of Christmas and New Year's Eve)

The very best times to visit Universal Orlando in 2024 are ...

  • Jan. 17 – Feb. 16
  • March 1-8
  • April 15-30
  • Weekdays in the first half of May
  • The second half of August
  • Most days in September (minus the days around Labor Day)
  • Most weekdays in October (minus the days around Columbus Day)
  • Weekdays in November (minus the week of Thanksgiving)
  • Weekdays in December (minus the weeks of Christmas and New Year's Eve)

Historically, September has been the very best month of the year to visit Universal Orlando in terms of crowds because the kids have just returned to school. It is still our pick for the best month to visit. The popularity of Halloween Horror Nights, however, has brought in more crowds, and the event regularly sells out. If you're visiting the resort for that time, and specifically for that event, make sure you purchase your tickets first and book your hotel early. Those weekends could see more guests who come in for the event and spend their daytime hours inside the parks.

Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando - Hogwarts Castle

Keep in mind that September is the height of Orlando's rainy season. You should prepare for daily afternoon thunderstorms and possibly more rain than that. Come prepared with ponchos. With those caveats out of the way, we still feel that fall is a good time to visit Universal Orlando.

The Most Crowded Time to Visit Universal Orlando

The very worst times to visit Universal Orlando in 2023 are ...

  • Jan. 1-8, Jan. 13-17
  • Feb. 16-27
  • March 11 - April 16*
  • Weekends in May
  • June
  • July
  • The first half of August
  • The week of Thanksgiving
  • The first week of December**
  • The week of Christmas through the week of New Year

The very worst times to visit Universal Orlando in 2024 are ...

  • Jan. 1-9, Jan. 13-16
  • Feb. 17-28
  • March 9 - April 14*
  • Weekends in May
  • June
  • July
  • The first half of August
  • The week of Thanksgiving
  • The first week of December**
  • The week of Christmas through the week of New Year

*The big variable for spring is when Easter falls. When it's earlier in the season, there is generally a shorter, more intense "spring break" as school districts narrow down the week they give kids off. When it's later in spring, there is generally a longer but less intense "spring break" season as school districts have more variance in the week they give kids off. In 2023, Easter falls on April 9, and in 2024, Easter falls on March 31. That means we should expect two spring break seasons that are more compressed, making things feel a little extra crowded.

**The Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Cheer & Dance Championships used to take place at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, but as of 2021, Universal Orlando Resort is the new home for the national championship a week in early December. The championship is taking place Dec. 2-9, 2023.

Holiday Crowds at Universal Orlando in 2023 and 2024

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - The Grinch

Holidays bring crowds, and for good reasons. People are off from work and want to enjoy their time in the parks. Many families make it a tradition to gather at Universal Orlando to celebrate everything from Easter to Thanksgiving. Universal Orlando Resort has festive and frightening holiday events.

We've already mentioned the impact of crowds from Halloween Horror Nights, but there are a few other details of note if you'll be visiting Universal Orlando while this eerie (but epic) event is going on. While daytime crowds are typically not impacted too severely by HHN, know that Universal Studios Florida closes early on evenings when the event is taking place (Universal's Islands of Adventure, however, remains open!). So while you shouldn't worry about event crowds terrorizing your day, you'll want to plan accordingly if you want to maximize your time by either visiting Universal's Islands of Adventure or opting for a park-to-park ticket to hop over once Universal Studios Florida closes for the event. Wanna know more about the best time to visit Halloween Horror Nights? We've got all of the details in our full post. For more information on Universal Orlando hours, and which nights HHN will be taking place, check out our Crowd Calendar.

Christmas has also become a bigger deal at Universal Orlando than in past years with the arrival of Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Muggles and wizards alike are flocking to the parks to enjoy the holiday decorations, entertainment and food in Hogwarts and Diagon Alley. Plus, Universal is home to the green meanie himself — The Grinch!

Universal Orlando's Most Crowded Holidays

  • New Year's Day - Jan. 1
  • Easter - April 9, 2023, and March 31, 2024
  • Independence Day - July 4
  • Thanksgiving - Nov. 23, 2023, and Nov. 28, 2024
  • Christmas Eve - Dec. 24
  • Christmas - Dec. 25
  • New Year's Eve - Dec. 31

Best Holidays to Visit Universal Orlando in 2023 and 2024

Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando - Adventure Sign Islands of Adventure

Stock up on those precious personal days and consider visiting on these less crowded holidays. It will still be busy, but not as noticeable as Christmas. Do keep in mind that for 2023, we expect these dates to be busier than normal because of pent-up travel demand.

  • Veterans Day (and Veterans Day Observed) - Nov. 11
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day -  Jan. 16, 2023, and Jan. 15, 2024
  • Presidents Day - Feb. 20, 2023, and Feb. 19, 2024
  • Labor Day - Sept. 4, 2023, and Sept. 2, 2024
  • Columbus Day - Oct. 9, 2023, and Oct. 14, 2024

My husband and I will be traveling to Disney World on Jan 26 and leaving Sat Feb 1st. What is there to do there while we are waiting for our room at the resort on Sunday? There isn't much time that day since we can't get into our room til late afternoon. What is there to do while we wait?

You should check out Disney Springs. Great place with shopping and some of the best restaurants around. If you like wine I would highly recommend Wine Bar George, otherwise they have many world class restaurants. Disney Springs has free parking and is free to get in, and is one of the best ways to spend an evening after a day at the parks. You won't be disappointed.

Hi Mary Ellen,

Well, it depends on where you are staying, but all of the Universal hotels will store your bags. You could then either change into swimsuits and hit the pool or hop over to CityWalk for shopping and dining!

Hi -

We are going to Universal with our sons (ages 8 and 10) from April 17-23, 2019. We are debating staying at Cabana Bay versus Royal Pacific. If we do Cabana Bay we will buy Express passes. My kids love swimming so the pool area is very important. Can you recommend one of those over the other? Thanks!

Reply
Dec 27, 2018 at 2:07 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Amy,

I would do a cost comparison of Royal Pacific vs. Cabana Bay and add in the cost of the Express passes. Another option would be to do a split stay at both hotels. Either way, your kids can visit all of the hotel pools at Universal, so you could have one full Cabana Bay pool day even if you stayed at Royal Pacific. The pools at both hotels are awesome, but we'd always lean toward staying at the hotel that offers Unlimited Express, but that's just us!

Let us know what you decide.

We will be in Orlando Dec. 30, 2018- Jan 4, 2019 for our 2nd time at Unversal Studio's and Island of adventure, getting 2-day park to park tickets. Our "kids" are 21, 17, and 14 yr old boys. We are arguing over where to spend New Years Eve - at one of the parks, or Disney Springs and hitting one of the parks on Jan.1st and another day before we leave. Your advice?

Hi Angie!

It looks like Universal Studios Florida is open until 1AM ... this would be a SUPER fun way to ring in the new year, and convenient since you're already at the parks. (Our dream ride to be on at midnight would be Rip Ride Rockit.) You could also do bowling, virtual reality games, dinner, shopping or movies at Disney Springs ... but it will be crowded, so book any dining or activities in advance :)

If there are a lot of kids riding the rides, I would splurge for the express pass but if this is more of an adult crowd due to time of year I may risk it. The crowd tracker is showing 5/10 to 6/10.

Hi Jason!

It's always safe to assume there will be lots of families with kids in the parks, no matter the time of year! We hope this helps you make a decision. A moderate crowd level of 5 or 6 usually means that an Express pass isn't necessary, but will help you save time.

Our Crowd Calendar does predict that it will quite busy on Nov. 24. Single rider lines will be GREATLY helpful, but some not ALL rides have them :( If you don't mind waiting in line for those few exceptions, there's no need for an Express Pass. However, it will still save you a good amount of time.

Curious if I buy anytime tickets now will be good in 2019? When on Universal Studios website, you can't select past March just wanted to make sure they are good for all of 2019?

We ended up staying an extra night in Orlando in hopes of hitting the Universal parks today. Do you think we will need the express pass for today, September 10, 2018. (Sorry for short notice. I just found your site, and am unsure with the crowd calendar.). Thanks!!

With the 2 day park to park with 1 day free ticket---If we go to Universal Studios & then leave to rest before returning for Halloween Horror Nights, is this considered 2 parks in one day? Just a little confusing for this great grannie! :-) Thanks & am excited to having a small family reunion in Oct. - Nov.

I know this is a little late..but maybe for next year...my husband and I have been doing HHN for many many years...so here is a great tip...if you have a "day" park ticket and HHN tickets and a few days of HHN .. Take a late afternoon break but get back in the park around 4:45 they close to the public at 5pm..and get in a holding corral..they will let you out 15 to 20 mins before the general public comes in...you can get 3 houses in in under an hour...then do it all over again the next day..with different houses...once you have had your fill of HHN ride some of the rides that have long line during the AM that are so much shorter during HHN..I hope that all.made sense!! Lol!!

Hi Jackie!

Park-to-park (park hopper) tickets are valid between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure (the two parks at Universal Orlando Resort.) Separate tickets are required for Halloween Horror Nights.

Looking to go to universal Feb 23 to March 2 . Trying to decide if we will need Express passes for that time. Everything I find is moderate crowd and I really am not sure if that would still need Express passes. Obviously hotel stay would be extremely cheaper if I didn't but wasn't sure if you recommend them or not for that time

Hi Alisha!

Our Crowd Calendar predicts low to moderate crowds during these dates, so we don't find Express passes necessary ... especially since you have multiple days to explore!

Hello, Love your site and hope to book our Universal trip here. (Just bought WDW tickets for the Int'l Art Festival!) With the crowd calendar showing 9/10 at Universal the week of January 1--would it still be "doable" with staying at one of the premium hotels and using unlimited express? (And adjusting expectations?) Or do you recommend finding another time? Thank you!!

Our family plans to come to Universal Studios the week before Christmas 2018. We were wondering if should purchase jump ahead passes because it may be crowded that week or have the family just wait in the lines.

Thanks!

Hi Kristin!

You can check out our Crowd Calendar for details, but we don't anticipate the parks being too, TOO busy on November 1 and 2. Express passes always help you accomplish more and minimize wait time, but we don't see them as a necessity on these dates.

We are arriving July 28th and leaving August 3rd. Staying at cabana bay. Should we invest in the express passes for that time of year. Or just take our chances. Party of 8. Four adults and 2children?????

We just got back from our vacation there and stayed at the same location. We have season passes which includes the express pass after 4pm. It was well worth not having to wait in line for 1-2 hours at a time. We did the water park in the morning then went to the other two parks after the afternoon showers came through. I would recommend getting the express passes if you have impatient people who hate standing around just waiting.

Hi Mel!

As summer comes to a close, our Crowd Calendar does predict the parks to be quite busy during those dates. Express passes would definitely be beneficial and help you accomplish tons more with minimal wait times and stress.

Hi - we're planning a return to Universal Orlando *sometime* the week of Jan 12-19, 2019 (one day, as we're also at Disney), with 2 park tickets. Is there a particular day that seems better during that week (considering we're balancing it with Disney)? And, should express passes be necessary? Generally, we stay a night a Hard Rock, to get the passes, but we're not planning to do so this trip.

Thanks!

Hi Michelle!

You can check out our Crowd Calendar for details, but we would recommend visiting Universal on the 12 or 13. Disney marathons are taking place that week, which will bring a lot of extra crowds to the Disney parks ... making it the perfect time to escape to Universal!

Hey, Plan trip in June 2, 2019 for Universal crowds are heavy for the whole week. If we are buying the Express Passes, will it reallt matter what the crowd level is? Or should I just change trip to end of Aug and still do express pass. #Myfamilydontliketowaitinlines!

I live about 90 minutes from Orlando. Beginning of June will probably be crazy busy BUT not nearly as hot as end of August. The humidity stayed at bay until about a week ago. If you are not from here, August in Florida may be a little overwhelming for some. Just a suggestion.

Hi Tracy!

Express Passes are a huge help in saving time, but coming during the crowded season can still increase time spent in lines for the bathroom or food. Overall, we feel the parks are more pleasant and calm during the less busy time. We would recommend visiting the end of August and really enjoying those Express passes!

Hi, we’re thinking of coming to Universal Studios and Disney, July 27-August 3rd. I don’t care for the resorts at Disney, but we would like to stay at Sapphire Falls and maybe do 3 days at Disney and the remaining time at Universal. I’m wondering how expensive it would be to get an Uber/Lyft to Disney for those days. I’m also a little worried about the humidity and heat being so bad, but we want to surprise our son before he goes back to school. None of us have ever been, so any advice is welcome!! Thank you!!!

Jun 4, 2018 at 11:25 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Pam!

As long as you stay hydrated and plan time to rest, the heat and humidity is bearable in the summer months. First of all - Sapphire Falls is an awesome choice, and we love the idea of splitting your trip between parks. It's only about a 20 minute drive between Disney and Universal, so Uber or Lyft-ing is a totally affordable option. It sounds like you will have a blast before your little one heads back to school!
